Three experiments on the perception of lexical stress in Spanish (a free-stress language) by speakers of French (a fixed-stress language) are discussed in this chapter. The main goal of these experiments is to further investigate the effect of an ‘accentual filter’ that may lead to a stress ‘deafness’ in native speakers of a fixed-stress language....
In this work we introduce the analysis of DysList, a language resource for Spanish composed of a list of unique spelling errors extracted from a collection of texts written by people with dyslexia. Each of the errors was annotated with a set of characteristics as well as with visual and phonetic features. To the best of our knowledge, this is the l...
Poster presented at the 2nd workshop on Second Language Prosody (SLaP 2016).
The acoustic and perceptual correlates of stress in Spanish have been usually studied at the word level, but few investigations have considered them in a wider context. The aim of the present work is to assess the role of fundamental frequency, duration and amplitude in the perception of lexical stress in Spanish when the word is part of a sentence...
The goal of the present research is to examine the role of the acoustic parameters involved in the discrimination of Spanish lexical stress contrasts by French-speaking listeners, and to validate the results of a previous study in which we used a stress identification task. The participants of the present experiment were ten French-speaking advance...
In a companion paper (Carranza et al.) submitted to this conference we discuss the importance of collecting specific L1-L2 speech corpora for the sake of developing effective Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) programs. In this paper we examine this point more deeply by reporting on a study that was aimed at compiling and analysing suc...
We introduce a language resource for Spanish, DysList, composed of a list of unique errors extracted from a collection of texts written by people with dyslexia. Each of the errors was annotated with a set of characteristics as well as visual and phonetic features. To the best of our knowledge this is the largest resource of this kind, especially gi...
The aim of this research is to determine whether a prosodic training could improve the ability of French‐speaking listeners to identify the stressed syllable in Spanish words. For this, native speakers of French and native speakers of Spanish performed a pre‐test and a post‐test, involving a stress identification task. Between both tests, some of t...
In this paper we describe the creation of a corpus of texts written by Spanish speaking children with dyslexia, establish a typology of errors found in the corpus and explore the phonetic basis of vowel substitution errors. The results of the analysis reveal that articulatory phonetic dimensions and frequency of occurrence are relevant factors to b...
The aim of this research is to examine the role of the acoustic correlates of lexical stress in the integration of accentual information in French speakers. A shape/pseudoword matching task is used, as it implies not only a low-level acoustic processing, but also a lexical processing. Results show, on the one hand, an influence of the accentual pat...
One of the major challenges in pronominal anaphora resolution occurs when the anaphor is ambiguous. This paper explores the interplay between prosodic features and pronominal anaphora in ambiguous discourse in Spanish. The results for duration, fundamental frequency and amplitude of the segment in the speech signal corresponding to the pronoun, com...
The aim of this research is to examine whether French speakers are able to store and retrieve lexical stress information, using a task in which shapes and Spanish pseudowords are matched. The role of the acoustic correlates of lexical stress in the integration of the accentual information was also studied. Results do not seem to support the hypothe...
The perception of lexical stress in Spanish by French speakers with and without knowledge of the language has been studied with a technique allowing the evaluation of the individual or combined effects of the acoustic parameters related to the perception of stress. Results suggest in first place that the exposure to L2 makes the French speakers mor...
This research considers the role of temporal prosodic features for pronominal anaphora resolution in ambiguous discourse contexts in Spanish. Results suggest that duration cues alone are not sufficient to predict the antecedent but could provide helpful supplementary information to be integrated in anaphora resolution systems.
In this paper we present ClInt (Clinical Interview), a bilingual Spanish-Catalan spoken corpus that contains 15 hours of clinical interviews. It consists of audio files aligned with multiple-level transcriptions comprising orthographic, phonetic and morphological information, as well as linguistic and extralinguistic encoding. This is a previously...
The present work analyses the perception of lexical stress in Spanish by Italian and French native speakers, trying to take into account the differences between Italian, French and Spanish stress systems both in perception and in production. Our results indicate that native language influence is not sufficient to explain the perception process in a...
In this paper the transcription and evaluation of the corpus DIMEx100 for Mexican Spanish is presented. First we describe the corpus and explain the linguistic and computational motivation for its design and collection process; then, the phonetic antecedents and the alphabet adopted for the transcription task are presented; the corpus has been tran...
This paper reviews the development of speech technologies for Iberian Romance languages (Catalan, Galician, Spanish and Portuguese) with a special emphasis on the phonetic knowledge involved in the three core areas in the field: text-to-speech synthesis, automatic speech recognition and spoken language systems. Several important technological advan...
In the frame of VILE Projects (Inter-and-Intra-Speaker-Variation-in-Spanish for automatic speaker identification), we try to identify what vowel's acoustic parameters depend more on the individual characteristics of the speaker and less of the linguistic variables. Variations on standard deviation (SD), when grouping together parameters by speaker...
Segre is a rule -based automatic phonetic transcription system for Catalan, jointly developed by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat de Barcelona in the framework of the Catalan Reference Centre for Language Engineering (CREL, Centre de Referència en Enginyeria Lingüística). The syntax...
A preliminary experiment studying the perception of lexical stress in isolated Italian words by Spanish subjects has been carried out in order to find out possible cross-linguistic differences in closely related languages. The results show that there is a combined effect of native language expectations and acoustic information present in the signal...
This paper aims at discussing the complexity involved in the analysis of the phenomena associated to melodic variation in speech. It argues that it is necessary to distinguish three levels of representation: a phonetic level, a phonological one and a level representing the hierarchy of prosodic units. The phonetic level should include the actual me...

The aim of this work is to analyse the teaching situation of Oral Standard Spanish. First, the indications on pronunciation present in the official and unofficial normative documents, as well as in the descriptive publications are revised. Secondly, it is presented the utility of applying this knowledge to the teaching of phonetics and to the teach...
As in other languages, stress in Spanish is signaled by three simultaneous acoustic cues: fundamental frequency (F 0), duration and intensity. In this experiment, the role of these parameters in the perception of lexical stress in isolated words has been studied using natural resynthesized speech. Results show that the F 0 contour alone is not enou...

This work discusses three levels of representation in spoken corpora - orthographic transcription, phonetic representation and labelling - as well as some approaches to the transcription and encoding of spoken texts. Some proposals which have been put forward as a first attempt to standardization are presented, emphasizing the need of compatibility...
This paper presents a multilingual evaluation of the prosodic tools developped in Aix (Laboratoire Parole et Langage) in the framework of the MULTEXT project. These tools allow an automatic stylisation of the fundamental frequency curve as a sequence of target points (MOMEL), as well as a symbolic coding with the INTSINT system. The evaluation has...

(Speech Markup and Validation), devoted to assess the e...
The degree of velarization of the lateral consonant (l) is studied in three Catalan- Castilian bilingual subjects reading texts in Catalan, Castilian and French. It is suggested that language dominance for each subject may be related to the use of an alveolar or a velarized variety of this
Foreign accent can be conceived as a deviation from a standard norm of pronuntiation. It also can be approached from the point of view of experimental phonetics. Bilingual speakers often show deviations that can be characterized at a subphonemic level by using acoustic phonetic techniques. This paper studies the vocalic system of bilingual Catalan...
