Introduction
For my PhD research, I focused on the temporal and spatial dynamics of microphytobenthos (MPB; benthic microalgae) in the German Wadden Sea; mainly on the back barrier tidal flats of the East Frisian islands of Spiekeroog, Wangerooge and Norderney, along a continuous elevational gradient. Additionally, I mass cultivated 600 L of MPB and investigated the effects of nutrient levels, distribution and grazing on MPB communities in two outdoor large-scale benthic mesocosms experiments.

Ecology aims to comprehend species distribution and its interaction with environmental factors, from global to local scales. While global environmental changes affect marine biodiversity, understanding the drivers at smaller scales remains crucial. Tidal flats can be found on most of the world's coastlines and are particularly vulnerable to anthrop...

In the last century, an increasing number of extreme weather events have been experienced across the globe. These events have also been linked to changes in water quality, especially due to heavy rains, flooding, or droughts. In terms of blue economic activities, harmful algal bloom events can pose a major threat, especially when they become widesp...

Tidal flats can be found on most of the world’s coastlines and are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances. They are important transient ecosystems between terrestrial and marine ecosystems and their biodiversity provides important ecosystem services. Owed to their unique position between the terrestrial and the marine realm, strong e...

In the last century an increasing number of extreme weather events have been experienced across the globe. These events have also been linked to changes in water quality especially due to heavy rains, flooding, or droughts. In terms of blue economic activities, one major threat are harmful algal bloom events that tend to be widespread and can last...

Microphytobenthos (MPBs) are the main primary producers in shallow marine ecosystems, such as the Wadden Sea. We investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of MPB communities across the marine-terrestrial boundary over three seasons (spring, summer, and fall) on three East Frisian Islands (Norderney, Spiekeroog, and Wangerooge) in the German Wa...

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has gradually applied stricter regulations on the maximum sulphur content permitted in marine fuels and from January 1, 2020, the global fuel sulphur limit was reduced from 3.5% to 0.5%. An attractive option for shipowners is to install exhaust gas cleaning systems, also known as scrubbers, and continue...

Trait variation among heterospecific and conspecific organisms may substantially affect community and food web dynamics. While the relevance of competition and feeding traits have been widely studied for different consumer species, studies on intraspecific differences are more scarce, partly owing to difficulties in distinguishing different clones...

Molds and their spores are important to the global ecosystem. Thus, the thousands of different mold species are present worldwide and their spores can be found almost everywhere. Dangerous fungal contaminations that pose threats to the economy and human health are problematic especially in the areas of public buildings (hospitals), food industry (f...
