Ukraine is at the beginning of deep changes, which most probably will affect all the segments of its society. Ukrainians "shifted" westward with their values, dreams and ideas about the future.
Raport ze zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych
This text is a report on research conducted in Ukraine in late 2005/early 2006. The research was divided into two stages, a public opinion poll and in-depth interviews with representatives of Ukrainian opinion-forming circles. The public opinion poll was conducted in November 2005 by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology among a nationally...
The report presents ways used by the people in Poland and Ukraine to learn about each other as well as the result of this information exchange - the image of Poles in the eyes of Ukrainians and the image of Ukrainians in Polish perception. It is surprising that inspite of the long-term neighbouring and a long part of common border we - Poles and Uk...
The aim of this analysis was to determine why, in public opinion surveys in Ukraine, a decidedly larger proportion of respondents than in countries of western and central Europe do not have their own opinion. The most popular causes of such attitudes are the following: 1) the conviction that it does not make sense for an 'ordinary person' to to thi...
This paper examines how Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshaped Ukrainian society’s geopolitical orientation, solidifying support for European integration. Before the invasion, two visions—European and East Slavonic—coexisted, often not seen as mutually exclusive. However, after 2022, public opinion and political discourse aligned dec...
In the article, we are looking for an answer to the question why at the beginning of 2024 there is one of the lowest rates of support for Poland's membership in the EU in the last 20 years, and why the share of opponents turned out to be three times higher than in 2022.

The article discusses the transformation of Ukraine from a peripheral colony to a European nation-state. It examines changes in the interpretation of UkrainianRussian relations in historiography, public perceptions, and museum exhibitions related to the ongoing war. It demonstrates that since 24 February 2022, Ukraine’s politics of memory has exclu...

This chapter uses natural language processing tools to analyse the sentiment and emotions contained in online news articles and readers’ comments. We argue that the emotional charge conveyed in the media coverage may strongly resonate in the social perception. We also explore the polarising narratives present in the free trade debate and consider t...
This chapter tries to capture both the factors that created “the symbolic power” and “the symbolic efficacy” (Bourdieu. Critique of Anthropology, 4[13–14], 77–85, 1979) of economists’ narrative concerning international trade and map some critical factors of its transformation. First, we provide a brief overview of the theoretical concepts embedded...
The chapter consists of three distinctive sections. First, it provides a demonstration of how the Polish academic literature on the effects of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) compares to that in English, French, German, and Italian. It shows that the Polish outputs follow patterns similar to those in the other languages and makes a proposition that th...
This chapter provides a compact guided tour through a careful selection of facts and figures of international trade. We highlight the developments, trends, and tendencies which appear critical for creating narratives that are spread within the public domain. We also present a brief description of the FTAs referenced in our empirical material presen...
The chapter compares the Polish society to its international peers to determine the extent to which FTA attitudes are country-specific, and to what extent they fit and connect with the pan-European perspectives. We look closer at the values relevant from the perspective of international trade and the processes of globalisation. How similar or how d...
In this chapter, we create a media populism ratio based on Farrand and Carrapico’s (2019) key characteristics of populist and technocratic political styles. The self-imposed question, which at the same time constitutes a certain summary of our prior considerations, concerns the role the media might play in shaping the polarisation mechanism. We use...
We conduct a study of the public debate on Free Trade Agreements by analysing news articles and readers’ comments published in the Polish online media between 1996 and 2019. Working on a large sample of online articles and readers’ posts, we conduct content analysis of seven Polish internet news outlets and investigate how much expert knowledge is...

Through the lens of modernization theories, the process of European integration can be perceived as Poland’s second modernization, following the systemic transformation in the nineties. In this article, we analyze the divergent perceptions of the European Union, and attitudes toward European integration, as they coexist within contemporary Polish s...
The chapter presents the beginning of Ukrainian state (in 1990-ties) in the memories of Ukrainians fifteen years later.
This article presents the attitudes of Poles towards immigrants and analyses the factors that co-exist with these attitudes. Data come mainly from the European Values Study (2017). The analyses have shown a clear impact of media discourse on the social perception of immigrants, which leads to a split image of the immigrants: "real" ones, whom Poles...
A research project devoted to the study of the relationships between the public opinion, historians, education, media and politics as well as structural similarities and differences between historical culture in Poland and Ukraine is entitled Historical Cultures in Transition: Negotiating Memory, History and Identity in the Contemporary Central and...
The image of the past is playing an increasingly important role in people's identification with their own national and state community and the mutual perception of Poles and Ukrainians. We have been observing this tendency in Poland since 2001 and the first discussion of Jedwabne, as well as 2003 and the sixtieth anniversary of the Volhynia crime....
The place of a state in common beliefs of East-European societies is special, because for long historical periods this institution was first of all the instrument of external domination and as such it was most often contested. Its role in constructing collective identity was questioned as well. Nevertheless, the state constantly affected the identi...
In recent years, we have been observing an increase in the attention paid on historical issues and politics of memory in international relations. This is particularly true when talking about the relationship between Poland and Ukraine, where one can talk even about the conflict of memory. In both countries, but probably with a stress on Poland, the...
Survey research about images of the past present in the consciousness of Poles and Ukrainians. The results show also perception of important historical figures, evaluation of some events and the level of knowledge about history. These all are correlated with the measurements of two dimensions of national identity (civic and etno-cultural). The repo...
Transformation in Eastern Europe has its own characteristics, since it involves several parallel transformation processes among which there is formation of political nation. Given the findings of various authors regarding the course of Eastern European systemic transformation, one can hypothesize that the unfinished process of shaping national iden...
The Maidan protests that took place at the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 were yet another instance of social objection to the government in the history of independent Ukraine. However, they were the first to have such a dramatic course and an unexpected finale. Ukrainians showed a remarkable ability for self-organization and far-reaching determ...
The article shows the dynamics of mutual perception of Poles and Ukrainians that oc- cur against the background of growing intensity of Polish-Ukrainian contact, which is especially clearly seen after Poland has joined the European Union. These contacts led to the situation, when the image of Ukrainians in the eyes of the Poles turned warmer and ce...

The analysis is based on the European Values Survey 2008. It concerns the relationship between happiness or life satisfaction and the number of children.

“Revolution” was the favourite word of most commentators in their descriptions of the events in late 2004, connected with the presidential election in Ukraine. Still, some of them – few as they were – protested against this term pointing out to many elements that proved evolutional rather than revolutionary nature of the changes taking place there....
The article is based on public opinion data of 2003 and earlier and shows paradoxes in the perception of Ukrainians in the eyes of Poles - the generally negative stereotype based on the collective memory of World War II going together with rather friendly attitude towards ordinary people from Ukraine met in the streets and high level of confidence...
