Haiku poetry, a short poem with a clear form, has the potential to elucidate many unknown aspects of linguistic art. Previous studies on haiku appreciation have shown that negative emotion and cognitive ambiguity reduce aesthetic evaluation. Considering the importance of negative emotions and ambiguity in art, it is beneficial to clarify the proces...
This study investigates the effects of podcast format (monologue versus dialogue) on listener experience among Japanese participants (N = 296). Despite the growing popularity of dialogue-based podcasts, research comparing podcast formats remains limited. Participants were randomly assigned to listen to either a monologue or dialogue version of an A...
Since the emergence of ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly integrated into society, making it essential to understand how individuals perceive and interact with it. Given AI’s inherent ambiguity and uncertainty, this study examines the relationship between attitudes towards AI and ambiguity. A survey of 554 Japanese partic...
This study investigated how God saliency affects self-recognition and AI preferences across different Japanese religions, via two studies: a three-religion comparison (N=168) and a focused examination of Christians and Shintoists (N=120). Participants wrote about God or daily activities and completed measures of the small self, human imperfection,...
In the current era of increasing life expectancy, investment has become increasingly important for long-term financial stability and well-being. While previous research focused on risk tolerance and financial literacy among investors, little is known about the psychological characteristics of different types of investors and their relationships wit...
This study explores cultural comparisons in the aesthetic appreciation of gagaku dance through qualitative methods. Gagaku is an ancient form of Japanese court music and dance, characterized by its serene and elegant movements. Study 1 surveyed Germans practicing gagaku in Germany, revealing that the participants often experienced strong emotional...
Haiku, the world’s shortest form of poetry, has usually been deemed ambiguous owing to its length. However, studies have shown that ambiguity lowers the aesthetic evaluation of a haiku, which contradicts the belief that ambiguity is a characteristic of both the haiku and art in general. One reason for this contradiction may be the interaction with...
Despite its popularity, little psychological and cognitive science research has investigated sauna bathing, especially among healthy individuals. This study empirically examines the connection between sauna bathing and psychological factors related to bodily sensations and emotional experiences. Two experiments were conducted with healthy subjects....
Haiku is the world's shortest form of poetry, describing nature and ordinary everyday life. Previous studies and quotes from professional haiku poets suggest that haiku can foster self‐transcendent emotions, such as gratitude and awe. This study compares how those who did and did not create at least one haiku in the past month experience self‐trans...
Individual traits and reactions to ambiguity differ and are conceptualized in terms of an individual’s attitudes toward ambiguity or ambiguity tolerance. The development of natural language processing technology has made it possible to measure mental states and reactions through open-ended questions, rather than predefined numerical rating scales,...

In the psychology of aesthetics, compared with appreciation, there are fewer studies on art creation. This study aims to examine the influence of art creation on appreciation using haiku poetry with reference to the Mirror Model—a process model combining creation and appreciation. Although the model has been primarily used to examine visual arts, w...

In cognitive science, research about mental imagery is often limited to visual, often overlooking olfactory imagery. In this study, we examined the relationship between beauty and olfactory imagery evoked by haiku. We used an odor priming commonly used in cognitive science to measure olfaction so that we could examine the effects of environmental a...
Mental imagery refers to the representation of stimuli that are not physically present and has long been a subject of interest in psychology. However, most research on mental imagery has been limited to visual images, with other types of imagery, such as sound and smell, receiving little attention. A possible reason for this is the lack of appropri...

Haiku poetry, a short poem with clear form, can potentially elucidate many unknown aspects of verbal art. Previous studies on haiku appreciation reported emotional and cognitive effects on aesthetic evaluation. Since both change during art appreciation, clarifying the processes of these change during haiku evaluation is beneficial. This study exami...

Ambiguity tolerance is an individual trait indicating low aversion to ambiguity that is closely related to creativity. Appreciation and discussion of art are known to improve ambiguity tolerance, but the effects of appreciation and discussion have not been studied separately. In this study, we used haiku poetry with the characteristic of ambiguity...
With the development of technology, the quality of AI-generated text has improved. This is relevant in the AI art field, where AI generates literature or poetry that is appreciated. This study compared human-made and AI-generated haiku poetry, which is composed with 17 syllables and the world's shortest and clearest rules, to examine aesthetic eval...
In this study, ambiguity was classified into cognitive and emotional ambiguity, and their effects on the aesthetic evaluation of haiku were examined for native Japanese and German speakers. Because haiku is the shortest form of poetry in the world, it usually contains ambiguity and makes cultural comparison easier. Overall, 450 Japanese and 373 Ger...
The factors influencing poetry’s aesthetic appreciation are largely unknown. Some studies have reported features that affect the aesthetic appreciation of poetry. This study sought to determine which states and traits predict the aesthetic appeal of haiku poetry. We recruited 277 participants to rate 36 haiku on five characteristics: imagery vividn...
Ambiguity tolerance is an individual trait of preference for ambiguity that can be transformed by intervention. It is known that appreciation and discussion of art can improve ambiguity tolerance, but the effects of appreciation and discussion have not been separated, and there have been psychometric limitations. This study examined the effects of...
Aesthetic perception has long been an interest of many researchers. Examining what kinds of pictures are perceived to be beautiful, people can judge abstract paintings drawn by professional artists to be more valuable than those drawn by children or animals (Hawley-Dolan & Winner, 2011). In addition, people can distinguish between abstract painting...

As the COVID-19 pandemic clearly shows, we are living in an age of uncertainty and ambiguity. This study develops a Japanese version of the Multidimensional Attitude toward Ambiguity Scale (MAAS), which was originally developed by Lauriola et al. (2016) and has better psychometrics and reproducibility than previously developed personality trait sca...
