For the past decade, the reevaluation of the Laborian, a chronocultural ensemble dated around 12,500- 11,000 cal BP and stratigraphically located between the Late Azilian and the Mesolithic Sauveterrian, has made it possible to revitalize the research of the Final Paleolithic, during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. Several works have thus been...
Recently recognized as part of Final Lateglacial tool-kits, trapezoids remain enigmatic tools. The analytical part of this paper focuses on macro and micro-wear traces observed on Late Laborian trapezoids (GS1-Holocene transition, Atlantic facade) and their meaning from a utilitarian point of view. The consistency in the nature and organization of...
Abstract:
Initially, in Northern Europe, research about the Final Palaeolithic-Early Mesolithic transition has mainly focused on the changes observed in the hunting weaponry, then on those in the blade production. All have emphasised the major typological and technological shift, often explained by the adaptation of hunting strategies and mobility...
During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, the European archaeological records can be divided into two broad entities – the Epigravettian in the northern Mediterranean Basin and the industries characterized by the return of a well-developed blade technology in northwestern Europe. This large Western European techno-complex comprises several cultur...
A microwear analysis, using a combined low and high power approach, was performed on the lithic assemblage of the Lateglacial site of Ruien “Rosalinde”. Despite the excellent conservation of the artefacts and the exhaustive nature of the analysis, only ten artefacts displayed usewear traces. Although these represent a wide range of activities (incl...
The recent discovery of the site of the Rocher de l’Impératrice at Plougastel-Daoulas in Finistère provides new data on the question of the early Azilian period, and on the first evidence of Late Glacial settlement in the west of France. This article aims to present the preliminary results obtained after a first survey in 2013, followed by a first...
Le campement de la Fosse (Villiers-Charlemagne, Mayenne) : un éclairage précieux sur la vie des derniers chasseurs-collecteurs paléolithiques
Recent Laborian of the Peyrazet cave-rock shelter (Creysse, Lot, France). New data for the end of Lateglacial in Quercy.
Discovered in 1990, Peyrazet cave-rock shelter (Creysse, Lot) lies in the Haut-Quercy region at the limits of the Martel limestone plateau, several hundred meters from the current Dordogne River valley. Excavations begun in 2008...
This paper gives an overview of stone tool management processes identified from the techno-functional analysis of two Northwestern France sites attributed to the end of the Lateglacial. Investigating recycling, secondary use and maintenance processes on these two sites which are very different regarding both site status and raw material availabilit...
