Introduction
My research interest lies in Palaeolithic Archaeology particularly, the Palaeolithic cultures in Deccan Trap Region in peninsular India. Major focus has been carrying out research question based intensive explorations, applying basic field geomorphology methods and understanding site formation processes. Further targeting less traversed areas and identifying potential areas for more studies. Apart from the Deccan Trap region I have been working in a few other parts of the Indian peninsula.

The upper Manjra Valley in the middle Godavari Basin is well known for Late Pleistocene faunal fossils and Mesolithic/Microlithic sites. As far as archaeological record in the middle and lower reaches of Manjra Valley are concerned Middle Palaeolithic and Mesolithic/Microlithic localities were previously reported. These sites had yielded artefacts...
The coastal Odisha in general and Ganjam district in particular has been terra incognita as far as Palaeolithic investigations are concerned. Here we present interesting findings from our recent small-scale survey (2022) in this region. Our explorations led to the discovery of two Middle Palaeolithic localities. These localities have varied geomorp...
Upland Deccan is a part of the ancient landmass of Peninsular India, consisting of erosional rocky terrain drained by allochthonous and autochthonous rivers. Tectonically the region is relatively stable. All the rivers of this region are presently eroding their beds, consequently exposing the older deposits. Geomorphologically, the landscape is dom...
This is an annotations of research publications of Late Prof. S.N. Rajaguru.
Freshly dug building construction pits in the heart of the historically important Pune City on the right bank of River Mutha, a tributary of River Mula have provided new information on Late Pleistocene climate changes. Geomorphological observations of 13 such construction pits indicate that Pune and its surroundings likely experienced higher averag...
Eastern Odisha has been an important region as far as early farming communities and Early Historic period is concerned. Sustained efforts by Archaeologists have brought to light various aspects of Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultural phase in this part of Odisha. Lately even Palaeolithic cultural phase has also been identified. The present communica...

This communication attempts to re-interpret a lesser-known Acheulian site at Pedambe (Raigad District, Maharashtra) from the Konkan region. The site is associated with the hill slope colluvium, formed through debris flow and soil creep processes. This deposit was probably formed during the late Middle Pleistocene when this humid zone was experienci...

Abstract: The antiquity of early humans in the central part of Thar Desert goes back to the Terminal Early Pleistocene (~0.8 Ma). This culture, technically known as Acheulian, continued in the entire Middle Pleistocene. By and large the climate was semi-arid with dominance of C4 vegetation. The arrival of new cultural trait, known as the Middle Pal...
This is a short report (in Hindi journal 'Purapravah') on discovery of two Middle Palaeolithic and one Late Palaeolithic localities in the Mandakini River Valley in the Khurda District of Odisha.
The Krishna Basin is the largest in terms of area in peninsular India. It has been occupied by early hominins since the Early Pleistocene. Many Acheulian sites have been reported and studied over the years from this basin. A higher density of Acheulian sites is in the Hunsgi-Baichbal valleys and Kaladgi Basin i.e. in the middle reaches of the Krish...
Acheulian sites in the Deccan Volcanic Province (DVP), occupied by early hominins in the Early and Middle Pleistocene, have been reported from major river basins such as the Godavari, Pravara, Bhima, Krishna, Tapi, as well as in the Saurashtra region and a few in the Konkan region. Largely, the Acheulian technology is characterized by large flake-b...
Archaeological investigations in coastal Odisha have largely focused on early farming culture sites and the succeeding Early Historic sites. Explorations and excavations have suggested that the delta of Daya River has been occupied by humans at least since the 2nd millennium BCE. There was hardly any evidence of pre-existing Palaeolithic cultures o...
The discovery of palaeolithic sites along the river Sher of Narsinghpur has proved the area's potential contribution to the field of prehistoric research. Some of the known palaeolithic sites like Devakachar, Guwarighat, and Barurewa on river Barurewa, a sub-tributary of the river Sher have been well documented by previous researchers. A re-investi...
The volume predominantly focuses on various cultural and environmental aspects of the Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian tradition in India, particularly in the peninsular region; however, a few papers are dedicated to the pursuit of other features of Indian prehistory in a broader sense. Cultural typology and technology, adaptive and behavioural strateg...

The present communication is about recently discovered Acheulian localities near the site of Nagardhan. The note gives brief information about the geomorphic context of the artefacts. Lithic assemblage in the present study is very limited and not much data can be deduced from it. The findings have reaffirmed the early hominin presence in the mixed...
On the background of recent discovery of fortified Early Historic site at Pandhrewadi (Bavdhan) by the authors, an intensive attempt was made, to look into the Early Historic sites in the area near Wai town of Satara District of Maharashtra. Wai, being an important town in the present days, was a place known long back according to the textual refer...
Nagardhan is an early historic site in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Prehistoric antiquity of the site and surrounding region was established lately by the discovery of two Acheulian and one Middle Palaeolithic localities. However, this paper is a report on the microliths collected from the early historic levels during excavation at one of th...
The present communication is about recent discovery of an Acheulian locality in the Aurangabad District of Marathawada region of Maharashtra. This region has negligible reference of Acheulian finds; hence the latest finds are important to understand the spatial distribution of the Acheulian sites especially in the Deccan trap region. The discovery...
Recent investigations carried out by the author have convincingly established the presence of Acheulian culture in the Deccan trap region of the Upper Krishna basin. Previously, Yedurwadi was the single known fairly rich Acheulian site in the Deccan volcanic area of the Upper Krishna basin. The latest study has brought to light Acheulian artefacts...
The eastern part of Odisha, particularly the fertile alluvial plain in Khurda district is marked by a number of Neolithic-Chalcolithic sites such as Golbai Sasan, Ostapur, Asurdhipa, Suabarei, etc subsequently followed by Early Historic urban towns like Sisupalgarh and Talapada. There have been no reports of Palaeolithic cultural phase in this regi...
Discovery of Paleolithic sites under the Yale Cambridge expedition, in the Soan Valley region of Pakistan, has acted as a precursor to all major prehistoric investigations in the Siwalik Frontal Range. Recent researches in the Markanda Valley region, and Masol, have thrown considerable light on the Quaternary chronological environment and prehistor...
The Acheulian site of Anagwadi, Karnataka, India was explored and excavated in the 1960s by R.S. Pappu. A pebbly conglomerate present in the dry bed of a channel feeder of the Ghataprabha, a tributary of the River Krishna was excavated. The evidence pointed to the site’s open-air semi primary nature. However, these initial studies merely made a pas...
