The exotic ant Monomorium carbonarium (Smith, 1858)is recorded for two new cities in the Iberian Peninsula. A hundred workers of this black little ant were recovered from a pitfall trap in a small urban park in the city of Alacant (SE Iberia). A visual inspection revealed a large colony with numerous nest entrances, but confined in space. Its absen...

The Iberian Peninsula holds one of the richest myrmecofauna of the Mediterranean basin, but some regions such as Portugal remain comparatively undersampled. Although new unrecorded species have been regularly found and published during the last two decades, the sum is still far from approaching the more than 300 species known to occur in the Iberia...

A characteristically bicolored ant belonging to the Temnothorax sordidulus species-complex is described from mountainous habitats in Iberia and named T. estel sp. nov. Three additional and closely-related taxa are newly recognized as members of the complex, including the Iberian endemics T. ibericus (Menozzi, 1922) and T. platycephalus (Espadaler,...

The arboreal ant Temnothorax convexus (Forel, 1894) is reported for the first time in Portugal. A single colony was found nesting inside an abandoned gall near Lisbon. A full morphometric evaluation of the specimens is provided, including a small sample from the recently discovered population in South Iberia. High-definition photographs of the work...

The ant F. clara is reported from two localities in Barcelona (NE Iberian Peninsula), representing the southernmost record of the species in Southwestern Europe. Foraging workers were manually collected from both undisturbed and disturbed habitats. Its separation from the similar species F. cunicularia and F. rufibarbis in the Iberian Peninsula is...

Project
(1) We will review the status of 30 exotic ants recorded in the Iberian peninsula and Balearic islands, plus 10 species representing special cases of probable introductions in the study area. (2) Updated maps combining bibliographic data, citizen observations and new records will be provided, together with a review of the biology and invasive potential of each species.
Project
The first comprehensive catalogue of the ants of Alacant (SE Spain) is presented. A total of 107 species are listed, from which 23 are recorded for the first time in the region. Relevant taxonomic, ecological and zoogeographic data is offered for each species, and a revised and illustrated key for the worker caste is produced.
