Sustainable development of agriculture, which undoubtedly helps ensuring food and nutrition security (FNS), consists in including smallholder farms into market processes. These challenges are becoming global. The problem is to enable small holdings and micro-sized businesses to increasingly satisfy the evolving domestic and global demand and to compete for local markets with global corporations which are incessantly developing supranational commercial chains (supermarket revolution). In some regions of Poland and Europe this goal has been already achieved, but it is usually a local case. There is a need for new knowledge about a holistic set of market factors and agricultural policy measures which contribute to this positive phenomenon. The main objective is to identify market determinants – local and regional, and agricultural policy tools which increase the level of FNS and sustainability (economic, social, environmental) in smallholder and family farms. One argues that there are market advantages of traditional food production which enable small farms to actively participate in FNS and give premises for building a model of sustainable agriculture and multifunctional development of rural areas, especially in countries with fragmented agrarian structure as it is in Poland.
