Introduction
I am a trained statistician with a passion for enhancing the use of evidence to inform policy formulation and decision-making processes in sectors that are so pertinent to the sustainable development of sub-Saharan Africa. Such sectors include agriculture etc. I also have a great interest in maths and statistics education where I am involved in several initiatives to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics across high schools and University. One such initiative is the Maths Camps.

As in many countries, Mathematics is on average the lowest performing subject in the Kenyan end of school exam. It is in fact the single greatest barrier to students achieving the grades needed to get government scholarships to university. This problem has persisted despite long running in-service teacher training initiatives to address the issue....

In Sub-Saharan Africa, a major driver of agricultural production is the weather, particularly rainfall. Therefore understanding the weather and climate and how it varies in time and space is important for understanding strategies and risks and making informed farming decisions. Farmers, especially smallholders who do not practice any irrigation, ne...

The African Data Initiative started as a crowd-sourced campaign to improve the teaching of statistics in African universities. The analysis of climate data provides one suitable context to illustrate ideas that lead to a radical new form of teaching. The problem within the context comes first, the technicalities are largely reduced-mathematics is s...

Every African country has a National Meteorological Service (NMS) which provides short- term forecasts, provides seasonal forecasts, and holds historical climactic data. Historical data are used in many applications, including PICSA (Participatory Integrated Climatic Services for Agriculture). The PICSA project uses historical climatic data to supp...

University courses in statistics in many African countries are dominated by data analysis. This is just one component of the subject and students therefore lack knowledge on many important practical laboratory work components. Here we consider how data collection and data entry can be included in training courses. The next important stage of prepar...
