BACKGROUND: The predisposition of ruminants to indigestible foreign materials is becoming a major global concern in livestock systems in developing countries making gastrointestinal tract impactions severe veterinary emergencies.
Ectoparasites of dogs represent an important group of parasites. They often suck blood, cause pruritis, and could serve as vectors of many pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. In northeastern Nigeria, there is a lack of data regarding ectoparasites of dogs. Therefore, this study was undertaken to explore the external parasites of d...
Understanding the epidemiology of canine parasitic infections, gastrointestinal helminthic infections in particular, is crucial for designing an efficient control programs targeted at minimizing the risks of zoonotic transmission. A total of 470 dogs attending veterinary clinics in Northeastern Nigeria were screened for gastrointestinal helminths u...
The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and molecularly identify the species of haemosporidian parasites in village chickens in Gombe State, Nigeria, using microscopy and nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques. Background: Village chickens are mostly reared under the extensive management system; they are left to scavenge freely for food and other needs from the surrounding which predisposes them to several vices including bites from predators such as dogs.
This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of avian haemosporidian parasites in village chickens in Kwami, Gombe State, Nigeria using microscopy and the associated risk factors using structured questionnaires. To achieve this goal, blood samples were collected from 346 apparently healthy village chickens in Kwami of Gombe State, and a t...
Diarrhea caused by multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an important and common problem in companion animals, especially dogs. Moreover, these dogs may serve as a reservoir of pathogenic strains of E. coli that may cause enteric and extra-intestinal infections in humans and other animals. This study was conducted to investigate the ant...
This study aimed to determine the gastrointestinal nematodes in randomly selected turkeys slaughtered in Bukuru-Jos metropolis, Nigeria. An overall prevalence of 68.25% (n = 273) of the 400 turkeys examined for gastrointestinal nematodes was recorded in this study. Seven (7) nematode species were recovered from different predilection sites of infec...
This study was conducted to determine the major causes of village chickens losses and to evaluate the level of awareness on the consequence of Newcastle disease (ND) among village poultry farmers in Bauchi State, North Eastern Nigeria. Structured questionnaire was used for interviewing farmers. Results generated from 145 total respondents to questi...
Avian malaria caused by haemosporidian parasites belonging to Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon species transmit- ted by arthropod vectors is considered a global problem for avian species. Despite this concern, there are limited studies on avian hae- mosporidian parasites in free-range chickens in Nigeria and its sub regions. The aim of th...
BACKGROUND: Agama agama lizards are the most populous species of lizard in developing countries of African including
Nigeria. These lizards are insectivores; they feed on insects and other arthropods, which may predispose them to
different gastrointestinal parasitic infections, some of which are of zoonotic importance.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed...
The present study was conducted between November, 2016 and September, 2017, aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with haemoparasitosis in village chickens in Gombe State, Nige ria. Blood samples were collected from a total of 1820 village chickens and Giemsa stained thin blood smears were microscopically examined for the pr...
This cross sectional survey was
conducted from July to December 2015 in order to investigate the burden of gastrointestinal helminthes among guinea fowls in Gombe, Northeastern Nigeria. A total of six hundred fowls (viscera) were purchased from six randomly selected slaughter slabs. Out of the 600 birds examined, 479 (79.83%; 95% CI: 76.4, 82.9) we...

The comparative effects of honey and commercially available multivitamin (Vitaflash ® , Kepro B.V. Holland) on the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody response of cockerel chicks to oral vaccination against Newcastle disease (ND) at 3 weeks of age using live attenuated ND 'LaSota' vaccine was investigated. Sixty (60) day-old cockerel chicks...
p>The crude aqueous extract of Guiera senegalensis stem bark was evaluated for its phytochemistry, acute toxicity and in vitro antitrypanosomal efficacy in this study. Tests for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phlabotannins, saponins, steroids, cardenolides, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, and anthraquinones were conducted. A total of 15 albino rat...
p>The aqueous extract of Carica papaya leaf was evaluated for its phytochemistry, acute toxicity and in vitro antitrypanosomal efficacy in this study. A total of 15 albino rats grouped into 5(A-E) of 3 rats each were intraperitoneally treated with graded doses of 100, 200, 400, 800mg/kg body weight of the aqueous extract and observed for 24 hours f...
Aim:
Coccidiosis is an important enteric parasitic disease of poultry associated with significant economic losses to poultry farmers worldwide. This survey was conducted from June 2014 through July 2015 with the main goal of investigating the prevalence and associated risk factors of coccidiosis among village and exotic breeds of chickens in Maidu...
Aim. This survey study was conducted from April 2014 through March 2015 in Bauchi, Yobe, and Gombe states, northeastern Nigeria, to explore the risk factors associated with the occurrence of gastrointestinal helminthosis among indigenous donkeys (Equus asinus). Materials and Methods. A total of six hundred fresh faecal samples were randomly collect...
A study of response of village chickens to vaccination with ND I2 vaccine coated on maize grit as vaccine carrier was carried out in some selected LGAs of Gombe State, using haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. Vaccination efficacy of maize grit coated with Newcastles Disease I2 vaccine has been compared between adult and young, village chickens...
The study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of Newcastle disease (ND) amongst some village poultry species at poultry markets in Gombe, Nigeria. A total of 1200 (841 Village chickens, 320 Guinea Fowls and 39 Pigeons) sera samples were tested. Haemagglutination inhibition test revealed an overall ND virus (NDV) antibodies prevalent rate of 53.7%...

What reasons could bring about rises in lymphocytes , monocytes and eosinophil counts in chickens infected with avian haemoparasites?
I am looking for PCR primers that will amplify in the presence of any avian blood parasites infection which will indicate presence/absence of the infection in village chickens sampled in Nigeria. The primers should be able to amplify in the presence of Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and/or Leucocytozoon. I wish to use PCR to identify all the infected samples, even at a low intensity infections that I might have missed while microscopically viewing blood smears. I would appreciate suggestion on any available published protocol that will serve as guide to my lab work as well as recommendations on which primers design will bring success to my work. Thank you very much
I am working on haemoparasites of village chickens in Nigeria, blood samples were collected for the same but for two diagnostic study 1, as thin smear on slides for microscopy and on FTA cards for DNA extraction however, I wished to first gather my samples before proceeding for the molecular detection in reference laboratory abroad. I wished to know for how long can my samples remain safe?
