We studied the community structure and diversity of epiphytic bryophytes in a vertical gradient from tree base to canopy in four lowland rain forest sites of the Colombian Amazon (Amazonas, Caquetá, Putumayo, and Vaupés). Each of the 64 sampled phorophytes was divided into six height zones from the base (Z1) to the outer canopy (Z6). As a subprojec...
The checklist of bryophytes reported in the literature for the department of Boyacá (Colombia) is presented. For the territory, 849 species of bryophytes are accepted (6 hornworts, 330 liverworts, 513 mosses) distributed in 295 genera and 102 families. For each name, the source or origin of the report is cited. The information included in this cata...
Se reportan 120 especies, 81 he...
A new species of Symphyogyna, S. caduciloba, is described, based on the combination of ascending growth form, deeply lobate thallus, variable lobe tips with a small, 1–2-celled apical tooth which is sometimes replaced by a slime papilla, and caducous thallus lobes. Relations with similar species are discussed and a key to the lobate species of Symp...
A new terrestrial species of Colura (Dumort.) Dumort., from high elevations in the northern tropical Andes is described. The species differs from other members of the genus in the section Oidocorys Jovet-Ast ex Grolle on its unique oversized lobule and reduced lobe, and the smooth surface of the leaf cells. An identification key is provided for nor...
Introduction. The purpose of this study was to analyse the variation in the vertical and spatial distribution of epiphytic bryophytes across four forests in the north-western Amazon. We sampled along the entire vertical gradient from tree base to upper canopy in order to answer these questions: Is there vertical zonation? Is there a relationship be...
Based on our ongoing studies of the bryophyte flora of Colombia we report 15 liverwort species new to the country: provided on the distribution, habitat and taxonomic differentiation of the species. Lejeunea cochleata is a new synonym of L. angusta, and Taxilejeunea steyermarkii is a new synonym of Lejeunea pulverulenta. With 730 species recorded,...
The new moss species Polytrichadelphus spinosus A.M. Aponte-R. & Uribe is described and its diagnostic features are illustrated. It is recognized by the small teeth on the abaxial leaf surface, particularly on the costa, from the apex to the sheath, the pyriform to round apical cells of the lamellae, the broad shoulders and the stomata distributed...

We report the finding of a population of Frullania weberbaueri in Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar, Antofagasta Province, Chile. This taxon was previously known only from the type specimen collected by August Weberbauer in Lima in 1901. The new gathering is fertile so we describe here its sexuality and perianths, together with the oil bodies and the h...

A working checklist of accepted taxa worldwide is vital in achieving the goal of developing an online
flora of all known plants by 2020 as part of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. We here present
the first-ever worldwide checklist for liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta)
that includes 7486 species in 398 genera r...
An inventory of 384 plots on 64 trees, in four localities across the Colombian Amazon region (Amazonas, Caquetá, Putumayo, Vaupés), yielded 160 species of epiphytic bryophytes (116 of liverworts, 44 of mosses), in 64 genera and 26 families. Sampling was carried out in four non-seasonally flooded forests (Terra Firme), where bryophytes where collect...

We describe a new leafy liverwort species, Micropterygium longicellulatum, collected on Cerro del Torrá, in San José del Palmar, southern Chocó, in the biogeographic Chocó region in Colombia. The new species is characterized by its radially symmetric stems; very long leaf cells, to 80 μm; and strongly concave leaves and underleaves.
The liverwort family Frullaniaceae is circumscribed to include the single genus, Frullania, and has a complex and confusing taxonomical history. An overview is provided for the infrageneric classification adopted for the forthcoming worldwide checklist based on recent morphological and molecular studies. The genus is preliminarily subdivided into e...
A study of the diversity of liverworts and mosses in the Tolima snow mountain was conducted in four peatlands (north face, eastern and western slopes) differentiated by water regimens. A total of 54 species, 30 mosses and 24 liverworts, belonging to 35 genera and 29 families were found. With data coverage and incidence of bryophytes obtained, diffe...

Meteoriopsis Spruce and study of the type material, Frullania angulata Mitt. and F. longistipula Steph. are affiliated to Frullania sect. Intumescentes R. M...
Abstract—The development of a gametophyte within the confines of the spore (i.e. endospory) is one essential innovation toward the evolution of seeds, but this feature also arose in seedless plants. In bryophytes, spores may begin to divide prior to dispersal and germination, but always develop into a free-living gametophyte. In hornworts, multicel...
This paper presents the taxonomic treatment of Balantiopsaceae for Colombia. In Colombia, the family is represented by three genera: Isotachis, Neesioscyphus and Ruizanthus. A re-evaluation of the morpho-anatomical characters used to delimit species within these genera is presented. Seven species are recognized of which four belong to Isotachis, tw...
VI. Filiación subgenérica de algunas especies asiáticas asignadas previamente al subgénero Meteoriopsis ABSTRACT A type revision of the types of Asiatic species previously assigned to Frullania subgenus. Meteoriopsis revealed that they were erroneously included in that subgenus. Evide...
Patterns of diversity and distribution of bryophytes were surveyed across three different forest types: secondary montane forest and tree plantations of Cupressus lusitanica and of Pinus patula, in the Andean Central Cordillera of Colombia. A stratified sample design was employed to distribute 40 transects (50 × 40 m each) across forest types, each...
Frullania subgenus Meteoriopsis is composed of very slender and for the most part pendulous plants that grow mostly in Andean forests. The definition of the subgenus has been confusing due to the high taxonomic value given by several authors to the growing habit of its species and not to the actual diagnostic morphological characters: leaves convol...
Ninety species of liverworts are reported. They include 48 genera and 18 families; 73 of these are leafy liverworts and 17 are thalloid. The family with the greatest number of genera and species is the Lejeuneaceae, with 20 and 30 respectively. Sixty three new records were found for Boyacá. The greatest number of species (46) were collected on rock...
Nine species of Hepaticae and one of Anthocerotae are reported for the first time from Colombia, based on recent collections. Estudios en ejemplares tipo del género Frullania. III. Abstract: The taxonomic position o...
