Introduction
My current research interests include transmedia circulation, the multimodal communication of notions such as 'fact', 'truth', 'fake', 'belief', 'memes' and how these can be related to (geo/bio)political repertoires of (re)interpretation that (re)forge subjects/alterities involved in offline/online contexts of conflict or crisis. For this, I focus on the study of Discourse, Media Spaces, Digital Circulation, Meaning-making, Textual Disputes and Power/Resistance.

This paper focuses on the centrality of media practices to discuss in a transdisciplinary way how the Covid-19 crisis has been framed and communicated in Brazil across different media spaces, whereas the country became the second in the world with most deaths due to the spread of the Covid-19 infection. This discussion mobilises Foucauldian genealo...

This paper captures interactions that show how the Brazilian Army has been using a Twitter account. The Army’s account interpellates civilian internet users’ profiles located in the pre-conscription process and, as an effect, this dynamic contributes to constructing the Army’s on-line institutional identity. By capturing a military perspective of »...

Influenced by Trumpism, Jair Bolsonaro, the president of Brazil, has been presenting unsubstantiated claims about the existence of purported vulnerabilities in the local electronic voting system during the 2022 presidential race. As Bolsonaro gives visibility to such claims, that system (and consequently democracy) can be performatively (or ‘produc...

In this paper, I readdress some of the concepts discussed in Souza Júnior (2020), such as translation, frame, communication, translingual practices, transmediatisation and textual disputes, aiming to explore in an oligoptic way (Latour, [2005] 2012) the relevant dynamics and (re)articulations that emerge through such concepts and processes. They po...

In this working paper, I reflect on the centrality of media practices to propose a theoretical perspective that can contribute to analyse how the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis is being framed and communicated in Brazil across different media spaces. After presenting these preliminary reflexions and their related theoretical considerations, I sugges...

This transdisciplinary research is interested in civil-global wars (HARDT & NEGRI, [2004]2014) and in how experiences which contemporary conflicts generate are constructed through frames that materialise as texts and circulate in a multisemiotic way (i.e. articulating verbal, visual and digital dimensions). Drawing on Butler (2010), this thesis tak...

“Meme nego” (‘Nigga meme’) was the name given to a Brazilian “digital event” (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2015a; 2015c, p.318) which spread through social networks. The propagation of the event presented the expression “nego” (nigga), associated with images and auxiliary lexicogrammatical resources, which paved the way for the construction of particular views co...

Investigo, do ponto de vista “composicional” (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2015a) e “multimodal” (KRESS e VAN LEEUWEN, 2000; SO...

Expanding propositions of Souza Júnior (2015c), the present paper analyses the propagation patterns of media/linguistic practices, encapsulated in selfies, which the Brazilian Electoral Justice termed a ‘forbidden act’ – whenever selfies were to be taken inside voting booths and/or posted online from there, during the 2014 Brazilian elections. Sugg...
