Wind farms can bring problems for biodiversity, affecting Chiroptera in a very notable way. The assessment of this impact is considered at the Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), evaluated by the Ministry or by the Autonomous Communities (AACC) depending on the power of the wind farm and its location. Based on the guidelines proposed by SECEMU...

From 1999 to 2021, more than 2600 greater noctules (Nyctalus lasiopterus) were ringed over a large part of the Iberian Peninsula (52% females). The 18% of these noctules were recaptured at least once. Most of the recaptures (97%) took place in the same location that the ringing (roost or mist-netting) or within 5 km of this point, were carried out...

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a global priority. To meet this goal, the Spanish government is planning 89 GW of wind and solar photovoltaic energy in the draft of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for 2021–2030 (1). Despite the Spanish government's efforts to prevent a speculative bubble in the secondary market, there a...

A male Pipistrellus nathusii ringed in Pape Natural Park (S Latvia) in August 2015 was recovered recently dead in Pitillas’ Lagoon Natural Reserve (N Spain) in March 2017. At 2224 km in SSW direction, this is the first documented bat migration between these countries and worldwide the longest migration record of a bat. We also report other observat...

ABSTRACT Bat migration is yet a very unknown and understudied subject in Europe. Although migratory movements between the North and the South of the continent have been reported, particularly in the Nyctalus species, their migratory paths are yet unidentified. In the period 2016-2018, post-summer migration of two noctule species was studied in 22 m...

Bats require specific shelters where to establish their breeding colonies. They generally use natural roosts, although bats often also occupy human constructions as long as they maintain certain environmental conditions and are free from disturbance. In Acedo (Navarre, Northern Spain) three disused fish farm buildings were used by about 300 adult b...

Salbura park (Vitoria-Gasteiz) is a natural wetland and a good hunting area for bats, but with scarcity of roosts. The absence of roosts can be a limiting factor for bat populations. Hence, 95 Schwegler bat-boxes were placed in 2008 (1FF, 1FW, 2F with double front panel and 2FN models). They have been checked between 2010 and 2015 in order to detec...

On 25 October 2010, a ringed female of Leisler’s bat was found dead in a woodpile in Tamines (Belgium). This bat had been captured and ringed on 8 October 2007 in a bat-box, in Lizaso (Navarre, N Spain), placed 960 km away from Tamines. This is the first case known of bat migration between Spain and Belgium.

The movements of the Schreibers' bat, Miniopterus schreibersii, in the regions of Navarre, La Rioja, and the western Basque Country were studied on a seasonal basis by means of ringing and recapture data. A total of 3014 bats were ringed in the study area, with recaptures accounting for 198. We found only three breeding colonies and no hibernacula...

In the period 2004-2006 a sampling of bats took place in Aragón. Traps were set in 47 forests and 67 potential shelters were inspected. Mist nets, harp traps, ultrasound detectors and video cameras were used. A total of 1197 specimens, belonging to 24 species, were captured; 529 records were obtained and the presence of at least 120 breeding coloni...

The Iberian Peninsula represents the South-western limit of distribution of the noctule bat (Nyctalus noctula) in Europe. We present here new ecological and behavioural data for the noctule bat in parks of two towns of Navarra (Northern Spain) which demonstrate its continuous presence throughout the year. Between 1995 to 1998, 148 individuals have...
