The underwater acoustical channel is time-variant, and even on small time scales there is often existing no 'acoustical frozen ocean'. Popular is the use of WSSUS-channel transmission modeling (Wide-Sense Stationary Uncorrelated Scattering) for the stochastic description of bandpass signals in GSM mobile phones with moving participants; since this...
Performances of underwater acoustic communication (UAC) systems are strongly related to specific propagation conditions of the underwater channel. Due to their large variability, there is a need for adaptive matching of the UAC systems signaling to the transmission properties of the channel. This requires a knowledge of instantaneous channel charac...
We consider a range estimation algorithm based on the time-of-arrival differences between multipath replicas of a signal transmitted by an anchor node of known location to a silent node that needs to localize itself. We consider the geometry of the problem in the simplified case of a constant sound speed profile (SSP), and argue that the more reali...

Routing is a fundamental network primitive in any wireless network. Given typical transmit power constraints, it is very unlikely that all nodes in a network are within the transmit range of one another. For this reason, many messages may have to be relayed towards their destination through multiple hops. Other than the clear advantages this strate...
In this chapter, we describe methods to ensure reliable information delivery to higher layers at the sink(s), while keeping overhead, retransmissions, and discarded information as low as possible. The basic mechanism to achieve this is typically ARQ (automatic repeat request), but many variants and additional mechanisms can be used.

In the terrestrial field many interesting approaches are well known, like blind channel estimation, using GAME THEORY for Collision Avoidance, Carrier Sense Access, … but are these possible approaches for the underwater column? We are looking for literature.
Human/Machine-to-machine (m2m) communication in sensor networks and control channels: all need reliable digital transmission of short messages. For an underwater sensor network, not only a suitable channel code shall be found, but also the adaptive modulation cardinality shall be considered. The question is: Can the block error rate be reduced by larger input alphabets in combination with lower code rates such that the net bit rate as well as the symbol rate stays constant? To support research in this field of channel codes for short blocks, we organize a competition on behalf of the German underwater communication community: please see
We define a model as a adequate and dependable instrument. The adequacy and dependability of an instrument is based on a judgement made by the community of practice. An instrument has a background consisting of an undisputable grounding from one side (paradigms, postulates, restrictions, theories, culture, foundations, conventions, authorities) and of a disputable and adjustable basis from other side (assumptions, concepts, practices, language as carrier, thought community and thought style, methodology, pattern, routines, commonsense). This implies an profile and an anti-profile (prohibited use) for the use of a model.
