Chapter
The chapter follows the first steps in the institutionalization of sociology in Serbia during the interwar period, from the first journal in 1920, first courses at Belgrade University’s Law School, flourishing public culture of popular lectures and discussion of social issues, to the founding of the first association and the publication of the only...

In this chapter, we consider how sociology in Serbia evolved during the postsocialist period. Following its development through three phases—blocked postsocialist transformation (1991–2000), the period of accelerated reforms (2001–2011), and the phase of consolidation of capitalism through a combination of neoliberal economic reforms and escalating...

After a complete break with the pre-war traditions, Serbian sociology, as part of the Yugoslav one, was established in the late 1950s as a new science and a privileged source of scientific insight that the Yugoslav communist government needed for developing its original political model. The chapter follows the evolution of sociology in Serbia throu...
Chapter
In this final chapter, we summarize our findings on the historical development of sociology in Serbia through the lenses of the theoretical concepts selected at the outset. Looking back at the century-long evolution of sociology in Serbia, we point to critical events that prevented or slowed down the development of an autonomous sociological field,...

Simboli i drugi markeri prepoznatljivosti grada obuhvataju uobičajeno...

Chapter
Ivana Spasić in her chapter examines the concept of banal nationalism from a perspective embedded in the contemporary Serbian society as an instance of global semi-periphery. Such a vantage point helps detect three different, and sometimes divergent, meanings of the “banality” of banal nationalism: the geographical, the substantive, and the cogniti...

In this piece, we develop a more complex picture of the East-West divisions that have characterized much analysis of the region since the crisis began. By examining how differently positioned actors have responded, the migration flows become a heuristic for other important but less visible processes in post-socialist state formation and Euro-integr...

U radu se analiziraju identiteti četiri grada u Srbiji – Kragujevca, Novog Pazara, Šapca i Užica – onako kako ih vide njihovi stanovnici i pripadnici lokalne elite.

Rather than being just abstract notions scholars write about, patriotism and cosmopolitanism are used by social actors in ongoing social life. Whether employed to name “us” and exalt the values of one’s own group, or to name “them” and stigmatize what the opponents stand for, the two terms have long served as potent discursive weapons in the strugg...

The concept of „Third Serbia“ has recently been offered within the public arena in Serbia as the alternative to the former division into „First“ and „Other“ Serbia. Yet a whole array of ways „Third Serbia“ is discursively constructed hides behind this single name. What they all share is an explicit call to overcome divisions and cleavages, which ar...

The aim of this paper is to indicate some trends in the changing political culture in Serbia from the point of view of ordinary citizens. Discussions of political and economic transitions in Eastern Europe have tended to privilege the top-down approach, presenting general outlines and macro-processes. This paper on the contrary starts from the assu...
