Layered internet of things (IoT) architectures have been proposed over the last years as they facilitate understanding the roles of different networking, hardware, and software components of smart applications. These are inherently distributed, spanning from devices installed in the field up to a cloud datacenter and further to a user smartphone, p...
The emergence of a new breed of smart applications requires middleware platforms that enable the rapid development of IoT-based solutions, which can be hosted partially in fog nodes, as well as in a traditional cloud datacenter. Currently, there is no scalable de facto open IoT platform but the European Commission is pushing FIWARE to fill this gap...
The Internet of Things (IoT) is getting momentum, which drives us to design solutions able to deal with huge amounts of data coming from different sorts of sensors in order to make decisions to adapt system behavior automatically. While in recent years many IoT-based reasoning systems have already been proposed, there are no comprehensive results r...
The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its innumerous applications for Smart Cities emphasizes the need for context-aware systems able to adapt behavior automatically to instant environment conditions. Currently, there is a gap in terms of understanding how context information is interrelated, as well as tracking which events occurred under...
The Internet of Things (IoT) is gaining increasing attention in healthcare due to its potential to enable continuous monitoring of patients, both at home and in controlled medical environments. In this paper, we explore the integration of IoT with human-robotics in the context of motor rehabilitation for groups of patients performing moderate physi...
The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to significant data reliability and system transparency challenges, aggravated by the centralized nature of existing IoT architectures. This centralization often results in siloed data ecosystems, where interoperability issues and opaque data handling practices compromise both the utility...
The transition to sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks underscores the importance of reliable network services in critical scenarios, such as post-disaster and rural areas. Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks (SAGINs), which include satellite systems, aerial networks, and terrestrial communication, are crucial for global coverage in these conte...
In recent years, the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) applications has been remarkable, characterized by integrating tasks across multiple devices, forming the so-called edge-cloud continuum. The ability to reconfigure the software behavior over all nodes of the continuum has become crucial to support applications with varying demands. How...
The Cloud-to-Things (C2T) continuum combines the proximity of edge infrastructure to the devices with cloud resources to optimize data processing and response time in the Internet of Things (IoT). Proactive edge caching is a potential solution for meeting latency constraints in C2T environments, enabling efficient data processing and storage while...
The proliferation of non-interoperable smart objects within the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to a fragmented and heterogeneous landscape. The Web of Things (WoT), particularly the W3C WoT, has emerged as a promising solution to this challenge, enabling seamless integration across IoT platforms and domains by extending known web standards.

In edge-cloud IoT scenarios, proactive caching strategies constitute an effective solution to optimize the use of resources while ensuring adequate Age of Information (Aol). However, the implementation of these strategies introduces significant privacy constraints, primarily stemming from the transmission of sensitive data to the cloud. To address...
Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring applications of-ten require a flexible network design to continuously adjust device configurations and meet Quality of Service (QoS) requirements effectively. In this paper, we provide evidence of this concept in the context of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Mesh network, where performance heavily relies on tunin...
The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions a global market in which it would be possible to easily get data from IoT devices across the globe. However, the potential of this idea still needs to be unlocked. Centralized architectures fall short due to their lack of transparency and tendency to create silos. On the other hand, blockchain technology enabl...
Condition Monitoring (CM) is an extremely critical application of the Internet of Things (IoT) within Industry 4.0 and Smart City scenarios, especially following the recent energy crisis. CM aims to monitor the status of a physical appliance
over time
and in
real time
in order to react promptly when anomalies are detected, as well as perform pr...
Assessing the integrity of industrial and civil appliances has become a priority worldwide. Noteworthy, this goal requires a strong synergy between multiple tools, disciplines, and approaches to be attained via a joint hardware-software co-design of the different Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system components. This work proposes the
$\sf{MAC...
Low latency is an essential constraint for many emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Cloud-based solutions can impose excessive network and processing latency that might hinder the system's operation. On the other hand, offloading tasks to the edge layer - close to where data is consumed - might be unfeasible in many situations due to th...
The management of IoT solutions is a complex task due to their inherent distribution and heterogeneity. IoT management approaches focus on devices and connectivity, thus lacking a comprehensive understanding of the different software, hardware, and communication components that comprise an IoT-based solution. This paper proposes a novel four-layer...
The rapid and exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been generating a new breed of technologies that introduce several different protocols and interfaces. The Web of Things (WoT) architecture stands out as an emerging and potential solution to improve interoperability across IoT platforms by describing well-defined software interfa...
The chaotic growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) determined a fragmented landscape with a huge number of devices, technologies and platforms available on the market, and consequential issues of interoperability on many system deployments. The recent W3C Web of Things (WoT) standards aimed to ease the deployment of heterogeneous systems by introdu...
