Kiingereza hufanyika kwa haraka bila kumtatiza mzungumzaji au
kukwamiza mawasiliano. Hali hii ndiyo imetupa ari ya kuutafitia
uhamishaji huu. Tumeegemea mkaba...

diverse spheres of life. It is also used by people of all ages and from all

It’s a long held notion by many researchers that pronunciation and other “errors” in a language have always negative impacts on the learner. For instance, researches like Rapando (2005) Mbula (2011) and Gaithuma (2016) analyse different first languages and comment on what they refer to as linguistic interference to Kiswahili and the resultant poor...
Regardless of translation type, rendering messages from the Source Language (SL) to the Target Language (TL) is a process that involves a chain of translational activities that requires the translator to apply relevant strategies and solutions based on situation, context, client specifications, text function among others. All these require possessi...

These issues are evident even at the very basic structural level, phonology. This paper seeks to bring to light such analytical issues that are evident from some of the researches done on Kiswahili phonology....

A literary guide to reading Damau Nyeusi na Hadithi Nyingine short stories anthology.
It has been often observed that Kiswahili language is non-gender marking. This is unlike languages such as French, Spanish and German which are marked for gender (Mgullu 1999:181; Ashton 1944:42). This situation presents a problem in regard to referencing especially in casual conversation. This paper seeks to demonstrate two things: first, the stra...
Writers express themselves in varied styles regardless of the genre they use as their vehicle of expression. Writing styles can also vary depending on the genre in focus. In this regard, therefore, stylistic issues can be focused upon from a two prong approach; that is from a writer’s centered focus and secondly from a genre-based focus. Kiswahili...

The short story genre has not been given as much academic attention in the Kenyan, and indeed in the East African literary arena. This is in contrast with the other genres that have for a long time enjoyed attention from both writers and critics. This paper traces the thematic development of the short story genre from its traditional setting by the...
Borrowing is evidently a component of language growth and is, thus, a continuous process. No language whose speakers have had contact with any other language is completely free of borrowed forms. Gĩkũyũ language has had long contact with Kiswahili from early last century. As a result, borrowing is evident. This paper explores the various phonologic...
Standard Kiswahili has borrowed various lexical items from many diverse languages. As a result of this borrowing, Standard Kiswahili is at times (erroneously) seen as an admixture language born out of mixing different languages. The purpose of this paper is to show that while Standard Kiswahili has borrowed just like many other languages have, the...
Kikuyu, Kiembu and Kimbeere are Bantu languages spoken in the Southern Mount Kenya region. Although they are classified as different languages, they are mutually intelligible. However, these languages have structural differences at the phonological and morphological levels. Minor differences do exist but these do not imply the existence of differen...
Kiswahili is not classified as a harmonic language. However, this paper argues that the language exhibits some harmonic tendencies in so far as vowels are concerned. Consequently, the paper discusses vowel harmony as evident in Standard Kiswahili. The paper applies a segmental and a suprasegmental theory. The discussion proves that vowel harmony in...
This article looks at the morphosyntax of the Gikuyu Reference Phrase [RP] or what is now often known as the Determiner Phrase [DP] and formerly the Noun Phrase [NP] and shows how it fits within the formalism proposed in Role and Reference Grammar [RRG] the theoretical framework adopted here. Of greater importance is the fact that in Gĩkũyũ a demon...
