Assessing which security level a forensic patient needs to undergo treatment is an important first step in the forensic recovery process. However, criteria to determine the level of security are currently non-existent in Belgium. This project aims to investigate the applicability of the DUNDRUM-toolkit in forensic mental healthcare in Flanders.

The care needs of forensic patients are comparable to those of regular psychiatric patients, but forensic patients - in addition to general care needs - also have forensic criminogenic care needs. To investigate which instruments measure these general and / or forensic care needs in the forensic population, a literature study was carried out into the available generic assessment instruments (“comprehensive assessment”) in the sector of forensic psychiatric care. When considering the psychometric qualities, the content of the instruments and to what extent the instruments are complementary to each other, we recommended using the interRAI Mental Health, the interRAI Forensic supplement in combination with the DUNDRUM toolkit as generic assessment instruments in the Flemish forensic mental healthcare. This study investigated the applicability of those instruments in the forensic psychiatric field in Flanders.
