Extrahepatic bile-duct obstruction is commonly caused by pancreatitis in canines. Surgical decompression of the biliary tree is required when medical management is unsuccessful. The clinical presentation often includes severe vomiting and abdominal pain requiring targeted analgesic and anesthetic protocols. Locoregional anesthesia has been largely...

No study has determined the minimal effective dose of trazodone required to induce behavioral changes and its safety profile in rabbits. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the minimal effective dose of trazodone to improve compliance to handling, and to evaluate associated changes in motor activity, physiological and arterial blood gas parame...

Intraoperative hyperkalaemia has been described in dogs, cats, non‐domestic felids and in a calf. This case series reports the occurrence and associated complications in three captive‐held grey wolves anaesthetised for root canal treatment. Severe bradyarrhythmia associated with hypotension was detected in two cases before hyperkalaemia was confirm...

Introduction: Sedation with dexmedetomidine administered GV20-SC has been reported (Benito et al. 2022). This study examines the effectiveness of atipamezole applied in the GV20-acupoint (GV20-SC) on the head of rabbits to reverse dexmedetomidine sedation. Materials and Methods: Eight intact female New Zealand White rabbits (6 months old; 3.74 ± 0....

This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects of an injectable protocol using multimodal analgesia with or without opioids in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OVH). Thirty-two healthy cats were enrolled in a prospective, blinded, randomized trial after the caregiver's written consent. Cats received a combination of ketamine (4 mg/kg), midazo...

This prospective, randomized, blinded, cross-over study aimed to explore the efficacy of a low dose of dexmedetomidine injected SC on the head (GV20 acupoint and non-acupoint) and IM in rabbits. Eight intact female New Zealand White rabbits (5-month-old; 3.29 ± 0.23 kg) were randomly administered 10 μg kg-1 of dexmedetomidine SC on the GV20 acupoin...

Trazodone reduces stress in many species. In rabbits, however, no study has determined the minimal effective dose of trazodone required to induce behavioral changes and its safety profile. This study aimed to determine the minimal effective dose of trazodone on handling and activity in rabbits and to evaluate changes in physiological and arterial b...

Perioperative analgesic effects of an ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block with bupivacaine in rabbits undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy: a pilot study. This prospective, blinded, randomized study aimed to evaluate the perioperative analgesic effects of a transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) with bupivacaine administered to...

This study aimed to compare the analgesic effects of an injectable protocol using multimodal analgesia with or without opioids in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OVH). Thirty-two healthy cats were enrolled in a prospective, blinded, randomized trial. Cats received a combination of ketamine (4 mg kg-1), midazolam (0.25 mg kg-1) and dexmedetomidi...

Veterinarians often need to sedate or anesthetize fish to perform physical examinations or other diagnostic procedures. Sedation may also be required to transport fish. Painful procedures require complete anesthesia with appropriate antinociceptive agents. Regulations and withdrawal times apply to food animal species in many countries. Specific pro...

This case report describes a low‐grade malignant B‐cell lymphoma (lymphocytic lymphoma) in a 14‐year‐old mixed breed cat, diagnosed by bronchoscopy and diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasound and computed tomography). The patient was treated with surgery, and postoperative complications included blindness and a severe mycoplasma infection of th...

Two female adult formerly bile-farmed Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus), diagnosed with chronic calculous cholecystitis, underwent open cholecystectomy. The bears were anesthetized with 3 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam combined with 0.035 mg/kg medetomidine and 0.05 mg/kg butorphanol IM and maintained with isoflurane on 2.22 +/- 0.70 % and 2.05 +/...

Objective To determine the feasibility of umbilical cord‐derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC‐MSC) transplantation into the cervical spinal cord of horses by using fluoroscopy with or without endoscopic guidance and to evaluate the neurological signs and tissue reaction after injection. Study design Experimental study. Animals Eight healthy adult ho...

The pharmacokinetics and the effects of a single intramuscular (IM) dose of alfaxalone on sedation and cardiopulmonary and echocardiographic variables was studied in dogs. Twelve healthy adult Beagles (3 females, 9 males) were used in this prospective controlled cross-over trial. Echocardiography was performed with and without 4 mg kg⁻¹ alfaxalone...

A four-year-old zoo Baringo giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) was anaesthetised twice for surgical repair of an open fracture of the right mandible. On both occasions, xylazine was administered intramuscularly via a compressed CO2-powered blowpipe-pistol followed by etorphine and acepromazine. General anaesthesia was induced with ketamin...

A five-year-old Austrian thoroughbred mare underwent anaesthesia and was mechanically ventilated using a Smith respirator L.A.-90. Shortly after commencing, capnography displayed a curve compatible with airway obstruction and haemoglobin saturation decreased progressively. Unexpectedly, positive-end expiratory pressure and peak inspiratory pressure...

Objectives: To compare the effects of a lidocaine constant rate infusion (CRI) combined with 1% isoflurane versus those of 2% isoflurane alone on cardiovascular variables in anaesthetized horses, and to estimate the sample size required to detect a difference in recovery quality. Study design: Prospective, randomized, blinded, crossover study....

This prospective blinded randomized study aimed to determine whether the timing of morphine and phenylbutazone administration affects the breathing response to skin incision, recovery quality, behavior, and cardiorespiratory variables in horses undergoing fetlock arthroscopy. Ten Standardbred horses were premedicated with acepromazine (0.04 mg kg⁻¹...
