The transfer of both these Romanesque Christ images to the Centre de Restauració de Béns Mobles de la Generalitat de Catalunya has granted the opportunity to fully analyze and study them, detecting the pathologies and adopting the adequate decisions concerning their restoration in each case. The process has offered a significant qualitative leap ab...
One of the great issues of medieval iconography is dealing with hagiographical image construction, either narrative or not, developed soon after the death of a local saint. This paper tackles the case of Saint Ramon, Bishop of Roda and Barbastro, and the circumstances in which his memory was enhanced within the See of Roda de Ribagorça throughout d...
This book is the first monograph published on the church of Sant Climent de Taüll and its paintings. In order to reconstruct the genetics and biography of the monument, we start from the geographical and historical-artistic context and follow its evolution over time to its current state, from the space in which it was created - the Pyrenean area— a...
The Musée de Cluny in Paris acquired in 2014 a capital from a collection of Heidelberg that probably came from the cloister of Sant Pere de Rodes (Catalonia), which was added to the group of Catalan capitals that the museum has preserved since the nineteenth century. This paper analyses this capital, introducing it and bonding its figures to the ne...
La planificació estratègica aplicada als museus és una metodologia de treball per a repensar-los, replantejar-los i saber cap on volen anar. Tot i que ja porta uns anys i un cert nombre de museus catalans ja han fet plans estratègics, no hi havia encara textos de referència en català, elaborats tenint en compte aquestes experiències.
Aquest manual...

The interpretation of the architecture of the two churches in Taüll (Vall de Boí, Catalonia) has been one of the problems unsolved by historiography, which has focused on the mural paintings of Sant Climent and Santa Maria. From the first studies, Sant Climent de Taüll was considered as an example of the survival of an early medieval archaic archit...

7th Summer Course of the University of Lleida, organized with the Museums Network of Lleida (Xarxa de Museus de les Terres de Lleida i Aran)
Around the year one thousand most of the monasteries in the Catalan counties, as also of other European territories, had almost completely renewed their constructions. In most cases, the planning was composed of a set of monastic buildings that were arranged according to a central space, the cloister, which was both organizer and centre of the mona...

The restoration of Episcopal Sees within the cities that had remained in Muslims’ hands in the regions of Catalonia and Aragon led to the transfer of some of the Pyrenees Episcopal centres to the newly recovered ones. Our paper aims to survey a question not yet studied, such as the artistic and liturgical transfer of dedications and relics from an...
The association of the Romanesque portal with Roman arches has always had a place among Romanesque sculpture historiography. In this paper we aim, in first place, to raise some critical considerations apropos of this topic, dealing with the excessive focus on the honorific and triumphal arch as possible "models" for the romanesque portals, consider...
The recent edition of an unpublished essay by Josep Gudiol i Cunill rises the discussion concerning his figure and his scientific contributions –mostly unknown– within the cultural context of the Catalonia of his time. The relation between Gudiol and the cultural institutions, the issuing –or not– of his studies, and in particular his role within t...
This book deals with two of the great moments of the discovery of the Romanesque: the expedition of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans to the Ribagorça and la Vall d’Aran in 1907, which marked the beginning of the study and publication of the Romanesque art in the Pyrenees; and the removal of the mural paintings between years 1919 and 1923 and the sub...
Most of the Catalan Romanesque wall paintings are placed in museums and private collections far away form their original contexts. This fact has decisively contributed to its preservation. If in the new sites, the paintings have been fitted into architectural recreations, in their original locations copies have been set in. Both issues are very com...
Like every legend, the one from Ripoll also has solid foundations. The artistic itinerary of the monastery has always been imagined as a natural route, given the intuition of some of the great men that directed it, with Oliba in charge. Even so, there is nothing natural neither in the itinerary nor in the way it has arrived to us. Our point of view...
The works promoted by abbot Oliba at Saint-Michel of Cuxa (1008-1046) have traditionally been considered architectural achievements. At the same time, those works were also decorated with painting and sculpture. This article points out to the recovering of the ornamental features of Oliba’s art. Unfortunately, the most important part of these piece...
The Seu Vella hill, in Lleida, is a monumental site from which the most significant and emblematic building is the ancient cathedral, yet the king’s castle and the walls which converted it in a great fortified enclosure must not be forgotten. This book introduces the hill and its monuments, its different inhabited periods which were a very importan...
The well-known relation, and very often dependence, of the Catalan Romanesque sculpture on that of the three Toulosain centres shows in very different intensities, nuances and transmission channels. These influences and also some questions deriving from them (especially their chronology) are reviewed through the analysis of the four big groups of s...
Although the aristocratic promotion in Arts and Architecture in Catalonia in the Xth Century had been isolated and exceptional, it was expanding during the XIth and XII th centuries. The initiatives of counts and bishops were taken inside the contacts between families and the different powers, and personalities like abbot and bishop Oliba or the Ba...
This article presents the activities undertaken during the restoration of the Fillols' Door and Porch of the Seu Vella (Old Cathedral) of Lleida and the buildings located around them, together with the results of different historical studies. Apart from the actual restorations of the structures, sculptures and the emplacement of the stained glass w...
This book proffers an itinerary through the monumental history of Sant Pere de Rodes, back to the ancient periods until the last restorations, aiming to provide a complete and reasonable overview to the site. The romanesque centuries, which were the most significant of the monastery’s existence, have been extensively studied. However we have not re...
In this work, I propose reconsidering the chronology attributed to the stablishing of the church of Sant Pere de Rodes. The relationship between its sculptural decorations as well as its classical renewal program and various churches in the west-south of France and the Languedoc, dated in the eleventh century making it more likely the Sant Pere's n...
The Romanesque cloister of Sant Pere de Rodes (Empordà, Girona) is one of the parts of the monastery that has disappeared because of thieving. In this work, we try to systematize the few avalaible information with the purpose of knowing something else about how was this ensemble formerly. We start from the old vestiges and from the first researches...

The PRECA II project continues developing the goals and hypothesis accomplished within the final stage of the prior PRECA project (HAR2013-42017-P) which is currently ending. We will continue to work on the Romanesque Pyrenees as a main subject, however since new perspectives, procedures and methodologies. Culture, that is, people, goods, objects and artistic models travel throughout the Pyrenees and its valleys, becoming this region an area where relations, interactions and communications constantly take place. We depart from the hypothesis of the existence of a Pyrenean artistic region spanning though the XI and XII century, despite the limits suggested by the political and ecclesiastical.
