‚Nachhaltigkeitsdreieck‘, untersu...

Abstract: A basic understanding of climate politics is necessary for citizens to assess their government’s policies on mitigating and adapting to climate change. However, research on knowledge about climate change has focused on causes and consequences of climate change rather than climate politics. Even less research has focused on the learning pr...

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) proceeds on the assumption that scientific consensus is a tool for successful climate communication. While ‘speaking with one voice’ has contributed to the Panel's success in putting climate change on the public and political agenda, the consensus policy is also contested, as our literature analy...

What people believe about the beliefs of other people – second-order beliefs – has been acknowledged as a key factor that shapes public support for international climate policy. However, very little is known about their origins. Based on data from an online survey (n = 935), we analyzed how German citizens assess the climate change awareness in the...

The measurement and analysis of people's knowledge on scientific topics, such as climate change, is challenging for researchers. One reason is that objectives are multi-dimensional and that probability is inherent. Moreover, uncertainties can exist on the individual's level among the public, but are rarely grasped by existing scales. Therefore, res...

Various scholars underscore the importance of public engagement with climate change to successfully respond to the challenges of global warming. However, although online media provide various new opportunities to actively engage in climate discourse so far very little is known about the drivers of this form of engagement. Against this background, t...

Science is present in all dimensions of laypeople’s everyday lives and serves as a basis for decisions. However, scientific topics such as climate change are very complex, abstract and uncertain – thus for laypeople difficult to understand. Mass media act as significant mediators between science and lay audiences. Much empirical research exists abo...

The annual UN climate summits receive intense global media coverage, and as such could engage local publics around the world, stimulate debate and knowledge about climate politics, and, ultimately, mobilize people to combat climate change. Here we show that, in contrast to these hopes, although the German public were exposed to news about the 2015...

Instead, I am giving some retrospective summary.] In some larger joint project named RESIDENS, we have been working with partners from varying disciplines on the introduction of smart meters into private homes. Within the project, a larger number of families in the German city...

This article examines the question of how climate change awareness and media usage are related to each other. An integrated model for explaining awareness of environmental problems and behavioural intentions is developed. The model is then tested using data from a Germany-wide representative survey. In contrast to most previous studies, this invest...

Webble technology is the most recent form of Meme Media following Richard Dawkins' seminal ideas about memetics and relying on Yuzuru Tanaka's interpretation of the Meme concept in the form of IntelligentPad. The reach of Webble technologies is demonstrated by means of a particular Web-based interactive laboratory. It arises the question how this n...

Webble Technology is an advanced current form of Meme Media on the Web. The authors use Webbles for the implementation of Web-based interactive laboratories. Through evolving technical conditions, television offers rising possibilities to interact with programs. Hence, it might become some kind of individualized mass medium. At the same time the media choice changes. Interactive media like digital games or Web 2.0 applications rise significantly. This paper therefore deals with the systematic design of...

The UN climate summits are international public events which receive intense media coverage. In our project “Down to Earth”, we analyse how news from the UN climate conferences in Paris (2015), Katowice (2018) and Madrid (2019) reaches and affects citizens. The project consists of two related studies with different methodological approaches: one is an online panel survey, the other combines communication diaries with focus group interviews (only in 2015).
