Introduction
I am a Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), where I study how China uses a variety of tools to extend its influence abroad and challenge the existing world order. My current research covers topics such as China's foreign policy; dual-use technology and artificial intelligence; great power competition; and the Digital Silk Road. My broader research interests include China’s engagement in Africa and Asia, the BRI, South-South cooperation, and the international order.

This policy brief discusses challenges related to provisio...

This chapter argues for a re-examination of common theoretical approaches to China’s socialisation in international relations. I first introduce the debate over China’s rise and argue that studies of the country’s foreign policy have failed to account for a number of important elements. The literature on socialisation has done a great deal in tryin...
Thesis
China’s role as a global security actor has increased dramatically over the last decade and the country is now projecting its power and promoting its agenda well beyond Asia. In particular, peace and security have come to be at the centre of China’s Africa strategy and are now a major factor affecting not only China’s relations with African countri...

The relationship between the African Union (AU) and China has arguably become closer in the last few years. In 2015, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) established a diplomatic mission to the organisation, the third after the US and the EU, as part of its effort to move beyond bilateral mechanisms, which have traditionally been the preferred chan...

Asia and the Pacific1 is one of the most disaster-prone regions and the possibility that climate change may exacerbate the frequency and severity of extreme weather events is a real threat to progress made towards achieving sustainable development. To secure sustainable development gains and build resilience in the region, there is an urgent need t...
