Landscape planning studies usually consider landscape values through expert assessments of landscape aesthetic quality. Combining such expert assessments with people’s perceptions as derived from citizen-based approaches is advisable, but scientific knowledge gaps exist regarding explanatory variables of perceived landscape values. This study aims...

The main aim of our studies was to explore the driving forces of landscape change and their impact on the landscape as perceived by citizens in our study. We use quantitative tools for unravelling processes of landscape change over time and a qualitative tool aimed at capturing peo-ple's perceptions about those changes. We use the two municipalitie...

Coastal and terrestrial fisheries communities in Europe, often economically marginalised, are likely to face severe impacts as climate change becomes more acute. Although progress on climate mitigation and adaptation from national governments remains slow, local development actions can also address these impacts from the bottom up. In this paper we...

The 1990s saw a considerable facilitation of the concept of area-based cooperation between stakeholders from the public, economic and social sectors in the European Union (EU) with regard to local resource management. EU support programmes have given rise to community-based partnerships referred to as Local Action Groups (LAGs), in which the stakeh...

Undermined by the increasing urban sprawl as well as intensification of agricultural production, the urban–rural fringe agricultural landscapes face challenges of ensuring viable food production, reducing environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, as well as sustaining rural development. Policies and strategies such as the Common Agricultural...
Thesis
Full-text available
The dissertation consists of a series of five articles, whose main goal was to develop an original method of landscape evaluation for the needs of sustainable land use policy. Particular emphasis was placed on the possibility of applying the method on a local scale. The first article reviews the methods of landscape identification and evaluation de...

Landscape identification forms a base for landscape management and sustainable land use policy. According to the European Landscape Convention, each Member State needs to recognize the landscapes as an essential component of people’s surroundings. Poland developed a method for landscape auditing that will be conducted for landscapes in the whole co...

Changes in forest landscapes have been connected with human activity for centuries and can be considered one of the main driving forces of change from a global perspective. The spatial distribution of forests changes along with the geopolitical situation, demographic changes, intensification of agriculture, urbanization, or changes in land use poli...

Artykuł porusza problem wyznaczania jednostek krajobrazowych o charakterze rolniczym. Korzystając z oprogramowania ArcGIS a...
Article
The aim of this paper is to formulate a conceptual framework for integrating landscape value assessment with planning. Concepts of landscape value, methodological approaches and their possible use for spatial planning are discussed by critically reviewing interdisciplinary literature on the subject. The author analyses 47 papers presenting landscap...

The developments in suburban areas are changing the peri-urban landscape, by transforming the agricultural land into discontinuous urban fabric. Tracking these changes requires different approaches. The aim of the research is to identify the spatial development of suburban zone with the use of the spatial information-based approach of estimating th...

This study analysed spatial and temporal changes in protected landscape of Ślęża Landscape Park in Poland, covering an area of 7724 ha. The main objective was to determine level of landscape change of the research area after Polish accession to European Union by comparing land-cover maps from 2004, 2009 and 2014. With the use of prepared land cover...

The aim of the article is to analyze the methods of landscape identification and valorisation developed by Polish researchers to identify landscape units in local scale. I made a literature review of the topic and presented the most important methods in the form of a table. I analyzed the method of identifying the landscape in terms of the criteria...

This paper talks about shaping the notion of preservation, legislative documents about preservation and describes different approaches to preservation of historic parks in 20’th century. Enumerates main characters who took part in the process of preservation of historical parks. In Poland after 2nd World War the pioneer in this field was Gerard Cio...

The paper focuses on defining which types of space for play can nowadays be attractive for adults. To recognize the features of play preferred by adults in contacts with kids the exploratory research survey was conducted. The possibility of space use for play was analyzed as the localization for multifunctional forms dedicated for play for people i...

Project
This project aims at exploring the influence of mobility on sense of place and in consequence environmental stewardship in the context of cross-border regions.
Project
The project is primarily related to theoretical and empirical issues concerning the ambiguous concept of Europeanisation, defined as 'processes of (a) construction (b) diffusion and (c) institutionalization of formal and informal rules, procedures, policy paradigms, styles, ‘ways of doing things’ and shared beliefs and norms which are first defined and consolidated in the making of EU public policy and politics and then incorporated in the logic of domestic discourse, identities, political structures and public policies' [Radaelli 2004]. This project makes explicit reference to the two extreme types of Europeanisation – transformational (or “deep,” associated with “thick learning” – understood in this the project as a change of practices and preferences for new ones resulting from the priorities and recommendations included in the EU programming documents) and absorptive (or “shallow,” related to “thin learning,” understood in this project as adjusting the structures only to the necessary minimum to use financial aid, without the willingness to accept these changes permanently, potentially encouraging the practice of tokenism, i.e. 'pretending' to meet all EU standards. The main subject of the research in question is territorial partnerships, so called Local Action Groups created to support participative local development and financed from EU funds. The empirical stage will involve an analysis of all LAGs across Poland , using: 1) a content analysis of secondary materials (LAGs strategies; statistics from the institutions supervising the functioning of LAGs, the Local Database of the Central Statistical Office, and 2) original questionnaire surveys carried out at the offices of existing LAGs. The acquired quantitative and qualitative data will first be analyzed individually (analysis of one variable, monothematic analysis) in the scope of their potential as a measure of the level of absorptive (shallow) and transformational (deep) Europeanisation of LAGs and in terms of the spatial diversity of the investigated LAGs in Poland. The selection of the factors will be followed by the creation of a multivariable index, which will be created based e.g. on the Human Development Index method (HDI). Research will be carried out in cooperation of scientists from the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, the University of Wrocław (Poland) and the University of Leeds (Great Britain), however, we are open to cooperation in research and theoretical considerations also with other centers and researchers interested in the subject of Europeanization of LAGs.
Project
In recent years more and more attention has been paid to analysis of the forces identified in time which caused noticeable changes in the landscape and significantly influenced the direction of further transformations. They are called driving forces of landscape change. The scientific community is also discussing the need to develop research methods for identifying and assessing landscape services, defined as goods and services provided by the landscape to society. In this aspect there is a lack in global literature in terms of research combining the concept of driving forces of landscape change with the analysis of provided landscape services. It is important gap from the point of view of planning landscape changes and spatial development. That’s why it is necessary to develop methods of forecasting changes in landscape services as a result of the implementation of the spatial policy of municipalities and meeting the needs of the inhabitants. In this context, the main scientific objectives are: 1) Determination of intensity of landscape changes, classification of landscape types and landscape transformations types which have been observed in the research area in 2000-2018. 2) Identification and assessment of the relationship between the selected driving forces of landscape change and intensity as well as types of landscape changes. 3) Drawing up the list of landscape services within each commune provided by identified landscape types in the analyzed periods on the basis of survey research. 4) Indication of driving forces which have had the greatest impact on changes in landscape services. 5) Development of scenarios of the possible scope of changes in landscape services resulting from the implementation of the spatial policy of each commune included in spatial planning documents, resulting from the needs of the inhabitants and the need of landscape protection. Research project is funded by the National Science Centre, Poland, grant number2018/31/D/HS4/00659.
