Introduction
With an increasing global spread of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and emergence of carbapenem resistance among Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB), the importance of understanding the development and transmission mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance cannot be overstated. Dr Vu Thi Lan Huong’s research aims to unravel the complexities of these mechanisms within healthcare settings through a combination of research approaches and methods in implementation research and discovery science.

Conference Paper
Full-text available
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) is a global public health threat with high mortality and limited effective treatments available. This is particularly problematic in low-and middle-income countries with uncontrolled use of antibiotics and lack of effective infection control practices. This study aims to understand clinical characteristic...

Background: To formulate effective strategies for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in primary care, it is crucial to gain a thorough understanding of factors influencing prescribers' behavior within the context. This qualitative study utilizes the Theoretical Domain Framework (TDF) to uncover these influential factors. Methods: We conducted a qualit...

Objective Blood culture (BC) sampling is recommended for all suspected sepsis patients prior to antibiotic administration. We examine barriers and enablers to BC sampling in three Southeast Asian countries. Design A Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF)-based survey, comprising a case scenario of a patient presenting with community-acquired sepsis a...

In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as Vietnam, most hospitals at the lower level hospitals do not have access to clinical microbiology diagnostics, which could hamper the global efforts of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) control 1. Therefore, adapted laboratory solutions for LMIC are an important area for further investigations and shou...

Objectives To investigate the feasibility of retrospective prescription-based review and to describe the antibiotic prescribing patterns to provide information for an antimicrobial stewardship programme in Viet Nam Methods This study was conducted in two provincial-level hospitals between February and April 2020. Reviews were done by a clinical te...

Low awareness of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance may lead to inappropriate antibiotic use and contribute to the problem of antibiotic resistance. This study explored levels and determinants of antibiotic awareness in a rural community in northern Vietnam, through a cross-sectional survey of 324 households in one commune of Ha Nam Province. Aw...

Background Blood culture (BC) sampling is recommended for all suspected sepsis patients prior to antibiotic administration. Here, we aimed to identify barriers and enablers to BC sampling in three Southeast Asian countries. Methods We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating barriers/enablers to BC sampling from 1900 to 2020 globally (PR...

Introduction Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is an important strategy to control antimicrobial resistance. Resources are available to provide guidance for design and implementation of AMS programmes, however these may have limited applicability in resource-limited settings including those in Asia. This scoping review aims to identify context-specif...

Objectives Antibiotic overuse is one of the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), especially in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to understand the perceptions and views towards AMR, antibiotic prescribing practice and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) among hospital physicians in Jakarta, Indonesia. Design Cross-sec...

Objectives This study aimed to analyze the current state of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in hospitals in Viet Nam, a lower middle-income country, to identify factors determining success in AMS implementation and associated challenges to inform planning and design of future programs. Methods We conducted a mixed-methods study in seven acute-care...

Objectives To investigate the feasibility of establishing hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes comprising action-planning, educational interventions and data feedback in two provincial-level hospitals in Viet Nam. Design and setting This was an implementation research using participatory action process and existing resources f...

Background Antimicrobial misuse is common in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), and this practice is a driver of antibiotic resistance. We compared community-based antibiotic access and use practices across communities in LMICs to identify contextually specific targets for interventions to improve antibiotic use practices. Methods We d...

Background Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes have been implemented around the world to guide rational use of antibiotics but implementation is challenging, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Vietnam. Understanding factors influencing doctors’ prescribing choices for empirical treatment can help design AMS intervent...

In recent years, serosurveillance has gained momentum as a way of determining disease transmission and immunity in populations, particularly with respect to vaccine-preventable diseases. At the end of 2017, the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology held a meeting in Vietnam with national pol...

Background: As in many other low and middle income countries (LIMCs), Vietnam has experienced a major growth in the pharmaceutical industry, with large numbers of pharmacies and drug stores, and increasing drug expenditure per capita over the past decade. Despite regulatory frameworks that have been introduced to control the dispensing and use of...

Background: Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic disease mainly affecting men of working age and can result in death or long-term sequelae, including severe hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction. We aimed to quantify the burden of disease and economic impact of this infection in Viet Nam. Methods: The annual disease incidence for the period 2011-2...

Introduction Ventilator associated respiratory infections (VARIs) are the most common hospital acquired infections in critical care worldwide. This work aims to estimate the total annual direct hospital cost of treating VARI throughout Vietnam. Methods A costing model was constructed to evaluate the excess cost of diagnostics and treatment of VARI...

Background Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the commonest hospital-acquired infection (HAI) in intensive care. In Asia, VAP is increasingly caused by resistant gram-negative organisms. Despite the global antimicrobial resistance crisis, the epidemiology of VAP is poorly documented in Asia. Methods We systematically reviewed literature publ...

Objectives: Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic cause of severe meningitis and sepsis in humans. We aimed to assess the long-term outcomes in patients who survived S. suis infection, in particular the progress and impact of vestibulocochlear sequelae. Methods: This case-control study evaluated outcomes of S. suis infection at discharge and 3 and 9...
