In the past decades, polyurethane has emerged as a new material that has been widely developed and applied in coated controlled release fertilizers (CRFs). Particularly in recent years, the excessive consumption of petroleum resources and increasing demand for sustainable development have resulted in considerable interest in bio-based polyurethane...
Fertilizers play an essential role in increasing crop yield, maintaining soil fertility, and provide a steady supply of nutrients for plant requirements. The excessive use of conventional fertilizers can cause environmental problems associated with nutrient loss through volatilization in the atmosphere, leaching to groundwater, surface run-off, and...
Enhanced weathering is a proposed carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy to accelerate natural carbon sequestration in soils via the amendment of silicate rocks to agricultural soils. Among the suitable silicates (such as basalt and olivine), the fast-weathering mineral wollastonite (CaSiO3) stands out. Not only does the use of wollastonite lead to...
Urea is one of the essential fertilizer components for crop production. It can support the growth of non-leguminous plants that do not produce root nodules. The application of urea shows dissolution effect when it gets in contact with the moisture in the soil, and converts into the different forms of nitrogen species (NH4+, NH3, NO2-, NO3-), this i...
The agricultural fertilizer industry is on continual evolution; as the world’s population rises, demand is placed on fertilizers to boost crop-yields, yet at the same time societal pressures push the industry to become more environmentally sustainable. Our team, GeoRewind, aims to enable negative carbon emissions in the agricultural sector, through...
With the introduction of the stringent standard by pollution control board, it is our responsibility to treat the sewage to comply the standards of receiving streams. We are aware of the suspended growth process like Activated Sludge Process (ASP) and Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) and attached growth process like Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR)....
Leachate is a high-strength wastewater formed as a result of percolation of rain water and moisture through waste in landfills. During the formation of leachate, organic and inorganic compounds are transferred from waste to the liquid medium and pose a hazard to the receiving water bodies. Leachate contains high organic matter and ammonium nitrogen...
Noise pollution is a major problem in cities around the world. Noise is defined as unwanted sound. Environmental noise consists of all the unwanted sounds in our communities except that which originates in the workplace. Environmental noise pollution, a form of air pollution, is a threat to health and well-being. It is more severe and widespread th...
Nutrient removal is a key factor in maintaining the natural water cycle following human interferences and continued population growth has made domestic wastewater treatment both a requirement and a challenge in all around the world. Nutrient presents like nitrogen and phosphorus in treated wastewater due to inefficiency of wastewater treatment caus...
Fertilizers are any organic or inorganic material of natural or synthetic origin [other than liming materials] that is added to a soil to supply one or more plant nutrients essential to the growth of the plants. Fruits contain a high amount of antioxidants that are beneficial to our health in many ways. The present study deals with the utilization...

Defining the dilution factor is very important when we are working at the level of ppb (parts per billion) or ppt (parts per trillion). Other day, I was working on plant biomass samples to analyze available Si (Silicon) in plant biomass. I have gone through several steps of dilution and became so confused about what is DILUTION FACTOR. I did several dilutions at several steps (digestion, adding chemicals, again diluting to come up with the range of AAS) and it became so complicated. As always, I approached Dr. Rafael Santos and he solved this problem very easily, I would say just in 10 minutes when I was struggling for an hour. Finally, Dr. Santos made a good explanation with their whiteboard and step by step he came up with the solution.
Again, doing a Ph.D. is not just collecting and analyzing data but also needs to understand the chemistry happening in between. If you don't know how to do it then seek help. Asking someone doesn't mean your basics are not strong, asking someone means you know what you're looking for but you don't know how to approach it. I am thankful to have Dr. Santos as my mentor, peer and guide.
PS: Here's complex whiteboard solution in the picture :)

Doing a Ph.D. is not just generating data by doing experiments using sophisticated experiments. We should also understand how this instrument works and the principle used to make that instrument.
Today, while performing Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), I saw some leakage from the back of the furnace. Actually, water cools down the furnace, which runs between 1000-1200 °C. Suddenly, a pipe broke, and the platform became wet, and I was afraid of what would happen with this? I immediately shut down the instrument and called the technician. The technician showed me there's a rubber gasket worn out, and we need to replace it. They said let's try to change ourselves, and they came with tools (this happened the first time in the last ten years). We opened the furnace together and figured out we have a similar part that we use for GC (Gas Chromatograph), and luckily, it worked out very well, and now AAS is working again.
Did you experience the experiment failure because of the instrument? Have you ever seen an instrument from the inside? Have you ever become curious to see how parts work inside the instrument? I have always been fascinated to see sophisticated and highly precise instruments for quantifying heavy metals and contaminants. Maybe this will drive me to dig deeper into this area in the future.
What is the takeaway message? Try to find the solution if you see the problem. As an engineer, we always try to come up with something. We have ample skills, but we don't know where and how to apply them. We do not need to worry about high-concept things but let's try from the basics we have and see how it goes.
Elon Musk said, "I don't spend my time pontificating about high-concept things; I spend my time solving engineering and manufacturing problems."

Is it possible to combine SBR and MBBR in one reactor as an SMBBR for the treatment of the domestic sewage?

Removal of Biological Nitrogen
The objective of this project is to assess the suitability of ambient weathering for large-scale carbon sequestration, its compatibility with the agricultural sector, and the feasibility of this approach. The immediate goal is to study how much and how fast CO2 can be stored inorganically in mineral additives in crop soils, and to assess the effect of mineral additions on crop growth and quality.
