During the first years of the last decade, Egypt used to face recurrent electricity cut-offs in summer. In the past few years, the electricity tariff dramatically increased. Radiative cooling to the clear night sky is a renewable energy source that represents a relative solution. The dry desert climate promotes nocturnal radiative cooling applicati...

p>Fourth and fifth generation district heating (DH) systems have emerged as major contributors to decarbonise the heat sector. However, questions arise about the future trajectory of their existing older versions, which operate at relatively high temperatures. The transformation pathways and operation of DH networks require accurate but simple mode...

This paper presents the first part of a research-work conducted at the University of Applied Sciences (HFT-Stuttgart). The aim of the research was to investigate the potential of low-cost renewable energy systems to reduce the energy demand of the building sector in hot and dry areas. Radiative cooling to the night sky represents a low-cost renewab...

Machine learning (ML) could be used to overcome one of the largest sources of uncertainty in wind resource assessment: to accurately predict the wind speed (WS) at the wind turbine hub height. Therefore, this research defined and evaluated the performance of seven ML supervised algorithms (regressions, decision tree, support vector machines, and an...

Linear programming is used as a standard tool for optimizing unit commitment or power flows in energy supply systems. For heat supply systems, however, it faces a relevant limitation: For them, energy yield depends on the output temperature, thus, both quantities would have to be optimized simultaneously and the resulting problem is quadratic. As a...

We present a method to turn the results of model-based optimisations into resilient and comprehensible control strategies. Our approach is to define priority lists for all available technologies in a district energy system. Using linear discriminant analysis and the results of the optimisations, these are then assigned to discrete time steps using...

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many aspects of human life, including mobility. In a local context, the University of Oldenburg (Germany) suspended all in-person lectures and business trips in March 2020, affecting the energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the community. This paper presents the evaluation of emissions resulting from m...

There are 1454 district heating systems in Germany. Most of them are fossil based and with high temperature levels, which is neither efficient nor sustainable and needs to be changed for reaching the 2050 climate goals. In this paper, we present a case study for transforming a high to low temperature district heating system which is more suitable f...

For a successful energy transition, the renewable energy supply in the sectors of electricity, mobility and heat should be equally addressed. This paper presents a suitable method for performing a comprehensive hazard and risk analysis of such a multi-modal local energy system. The method allows identifying trends in the level of critical risks of...

A heating transition is urgently needed to fulfil the national CO2 reduction targets in Germany. Thus, in 2019, there has been a strong policy push towards increasing the share of renewables in heating through the introduction of the Climate Action Programme 2030 and the reform of existing policies. In addition to the policy landscape on the nation...

The increased complexity of renewable energy systems derives in uncertain and vulnerable systems behavior, making necessary for energy experts to understand and apply resilience studies with interdisciplinary approaches. With this aim, we have designed a postgraduate course on resilience of energy systems, pursuing an "exchange interdisciplinarity"...

The role of faculty in higher education as knowledge disseminators within the knowledge and digital society can be completely redefined. This paper presents results from a video-based flipped classroom approach combined with a project-oriented learning arrangement. I show that videos combined with a project-based learning setting can be a powerful...

Quality monitoring and success assessment of academic study programs is beneficial to satisfy the needs of students, lecturers and employers of the graduates. However, the diversity of processes involved (e.g. coaching, competence development or further training for lecturers) among the main actors (educational institutions, learners and profession...

In order to achieve a sustainable transformation of the energy supply systems on regional, national and global scales an integrated knowledge about the ecological, economic and social consequences of the new energy systems will be needed – on learners' side (later decision maker and stakeholder) as well as on teachers' side. In this context, to dea...

In laboratory higher education critical evaluation and assessment of obtained data and the implemented measurement procedures are addressed. Typically, to foster this reflection process laboratory reports are requested. Such written assignments are usually carried out individually or by reduced groups of students, therefore more focused on the indi...

Due to the low temperature level demanded for space heating and domestic hot water supply in buildings exergy demands for these energy uses are low. However, these demands are often met by high grade energy sources, such as fossil fuels or electricity which could instead be used for other higher-grade applications (e.g. power production). The use o...

Exergy analysis is a more powerful tool than mere energy analysis for showing the improvement potential of energy systems. Direct use of solar radiation instead of degrading other high quality energy resources found in nature is advantageous. Yet, due to physical inconsistencies present in the exergy analysis framework for assessing direct-solar sy...

The building sector is responsible for a great share of the final energy demand and national CO2 emissions in countries like Germany. Nowadays, low quality thermal energy demands in buildings are mainly satisfied with high-quality sources (e.g. natural gas fired in condensing boilers). Exergy analysis, pursuing a matching in the quality level of en...
Article
Exergy is naturally related to the concept of quality of energy. Therefore, exergy analysis has been widely applied in parallel with energy analysis in order to find the most rational use of energy. Within the built environment a wide margin for exergy saving may be found. Actually, buildings require mostly low quality energy for thermal uses at lo...

A more efficient use of energy in the built environment is absolutely necessary. Using the exergy concept delivers more complete information on the use of the energy flows within buildings and opens up room for further improvements within the field. The aim of this study is to gain deeper insight into how the energy is being used in two already eff...

Exergy analysis is a powerful tool for the detection and quantification of the improving potential of complex energy systems. Low temperature waste heat is a thermal energy flow with low exergy content, being thus suitable to supply the naturally low-quality (i.e. with low exergy content) thermal energy demands in buildings (space heating and domes...
