Introduction
My research interests are related to systematics, evolution, biogeography, taxonomy, ecology and conservation of birds, with focus in Neotropical birds. My actual research areas are (1) systematics and historical biogeography with DNA-based studies, (2) application of DNA analysis and vocalizations for species delimitation, (3) link between phylogeography and conservation, (4) songs and vocal behavior of birds and (5) shorebirds and storm-petrels surveys and conservation.

Previous investigations of the systematics of Neotropical pipits Anthus revealed multiple cases of paraphyly. We revise the species limits of this group based on sequence data of mitochondrial (ND2) and nuclear genes (ACOI9, MB, FGB5) from 39 tissue samples of all 22 subspecies-level taxa in the New World Anthus clade, as well as analysis of displa...

The family oceanitidae, formerly considered a subfamily of Hydrobatidae, includes all the small storm-petrels of the southern hemisphere. The ancestor-descendent relationships and evolutionary history of one of its genera, Oceanites, have been partially studied, yielding contrasting results. We revised the phylogenetic relationships of this group u...

Foreword (Nacho Areta): Fortunately, the book that is now in front of you, "Neotropical Pipits. Systematics, biogeography and natural history", comes to shed new light into the pipit darkness by discussing their morphology and natural history, systematics, and biogeography while directing attention to fruitful research avenues and pointing out to s...

The Cachirla Pálida inhabits moist grasslands of intermediate grass height throughout South America's southern cone. Despite being relatively widespread, it has a curiously fragmented range, with populations in Patagonia, the Altiplano, the central Andes, and the eastern Pampas and coastal grasslands of the southeast of the continent. These populat...

Urban areas form a complex, heterogeneous, fragmented mosaic of habitats, including ecosystems in different degrees of alteration. Nevertheless, some species of birds of prey can thrive in cities. But, there is a knowledge gap regarding the species of birds of prey that who inhabit the cities in Chile, especially those that reproduce in it. Hence,...

Fuegian Snipe Gallinago stricklandii is a poorly known wader found in southern Chile and south-west Argentina, but knowledge of its distribution is still incomplete. Historical records suggest a breeding range between 48°S and 56°S in the Patagonian fjords, however especially few data are available for the north of its presumed distribution. Here w...

We describe for the first time the nest of the Paramo Pipit (Anthus bogotensis), from Runtacocha in Apurímac Department, central Peru and compare it to the known nests of other Neotropical pipits. We found the nest, which was concealed below dense ichu grass, on 17 November 2004 in a puna grassland at approximately 4250 m elevation. The nest consis...

The sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) was intensively exploited throughout its range, with about 110.000 individuals hunted by pelagic fleets in Antarctic waters between 1960 and 1970. In addition, basic information on its distribution, migratory routes, and feeding grounds in the southeastern Pacific, has been poorly documented. In the case of Chi...

Cities in general possess limited areas of original vegetation, or even artificial green areas; this results in drastic modification of faunal communities, with reductions in their original abundance and diversity. Nevertheless, some species are able to thrive in cities, including high trophic level species such as raptors. The object of this study...

Chile has a large number of wetlands that offer a wide variety of refuges and food to waterbird assemblages. This research hypothesizes that these assemblages differ according to the structural characteristics of each type of inland wetland. The object is to identify the structure of these assemblages, evaluating their richness, alpha diversity and...
