Red list of Austrian vascular plants.

Out of 211 species of the Habitats Directive´s Annexes, 53 species, which is a share of 25%, belong to the plants, with 39 of them vascular plants, 13 bryophytes and one taxon of lichens. 10 of those species have been monitored according to Article 11 Habitats Directive in the last reporting periode (2013.2018). In the upcoming periode (2019-2024)...
Myricaria germanica (German tamarisk or false tamarisk), Tamaricaceae, is a pioneer shrub native to the Eurasian temperate regions where it colonises gravel bars in braided rivers. Over the past 150 years, human alterations of rivers have caused its dramatic decline in Europe. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on the taxonomy, morph...
The Austrian report under Article 17 of Habitats Directive for the period 2013-2018 was based on monitoring data for 31 habitat types and 38 species, on data of the Austrian Forest Inventory and on additional data. Monitoring of habitats and species in Austria is conduced in four main steps: (1) compilation of occurrence data, (2) decision on monit...
In 2011, the European Union published a Biodiversity Strategy for the period 2011–2020 (EUROPEAN COMMISSION 2011). The goals and measures of this strategy are based on the so-called Aichi Targets, which were adopted at the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya.
Target 2 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy calls...

Aims: River gravel bars are endangered habitats in Europe. However, classification schemes of their vegetation and habitat types differ among European countries, and they are even ignored in some national schemes. This causes problems in conservation planning, monitoring and management. Hence we aimed at building the first unified vegetation classi...
This report aims at identifying the habitat types from the Annex I of the Habitats Directive that are the most important for pollinating insects. Typical plant species for Annex I habitat types (6.693 species) were classified regarding their importance (used as food source) for pollinating insects (about 3.800 species). Then, species richness of th...
Planungsrahmen. Als relevante Grundlage wurde dafür das Aueninventar Österreichs (AI)
genannt (Lazowski & Schwarz et al. 2014).
According to the Interpretation Manual of the European Union, habitat 3230, “Alpine rivers and their ligneous vegetation with Myricaria germanica” is described as: communities of low shrubby pioneers invading the herbaceous formations on gravel deposits rich in fine silt, of mountain and northern boreal streams with an Alpine, summer-high, flow reg...
Habitats Directive obliges Member States in its Article 11 to undertake surveillance of the conservation status of habitat types and species of the Annexes. Every six years Member States have to report to the European Commission on the main results of this surveillance in their reports under Article 17 of the Directive.
In preparation of the 2013–...
According to Article 17 of Habitats Directive Member States have to draw up reports to the European Commission every six years on the results of their surveillance of the conservation status of habitat types and species. On the basis of the Member State reports the European Commission prepares a com-posite report. Since the Commission has delivered...
The EU Habitats Directive demands monitoring and managing its Annex species and habitats. In this session,
we will discuss this subject area for Alpine rivers. The special focus will be on key species and their habitat types
3220, 3230, 3240 “Alpine rivers” and 7240* and 91E0. Within the last EU Habitats Directive, Article 17 Reporting, the

Online available databases and inventories like "Nationally designated areas (CDDA)", "Protected Planet" or "Natura 2000 network of protected areas" hold qualitative and spatial information about protected areas (in the broadest sense) in Europe and around the world. Riparian zones represent transitional areas occurring between land and freshwater...
For the purpose of an ongoing research project dealing with the classification of European river gravel bar vegetation, we collected and digitized vegetation-plot data included in the Gravel Bar Vegetation Database (GIVD ID: EU-00-025, http: //www.givd.info/ID/EU-00-025). The database consists of vegetation plots obtained from the literature and fr...
