Introduction

Urban green spaces (UGSs) provide essential environmental services for the well-being of ecosystems and society. Due to the constant environmental, social, and economic transformations of cities, UGSs pose new challenges for management, particularly in fast-growing metropolitan areas. With technological advancement and the evolution of deep learnin...
The development of the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA) and human carelessness have severely altered the Santa Catarina River (SCR). The objective of this research was to integrate fieldwork, a digital elevation model, exploratory surveys and satellite images analysis to develop a GIS-based map scale 1:40,000 and 1:5,000 of the Quaternary alluvial...
'Map Design' for MAP
A cartographic extent composition using an ISO ANSI D (863.6 x 558.8 mm) was designed at a scale of 1: 40,000. The main design of this map focuses in the central part of the general frame to display the geomorphological setting of alluvial terraces along the Santa Catarina River in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area, Northeast Me...
The Monterrey wellfield is located in the urban aquifer of the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (Mexico), and has been subject to considerably increasing stress. This area is constantly growing, both in terms of infrastructure and population. The overall objective of the present study is to assess and validate the aquifer’s vulnerability to contaminatio...
Groundwater contamination is a significant problem in Mexico and around the world. It can be influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. In Linares, Mexico, we identified several wells used to cover the water demand for different human activities with nearby potential sources of contamination, including urban, agricultural, and livestock...
The current problem related to the supply of drinking water for the metropolitan area of Monterrey, which comprises of five million inhabitants, and the important role played by the El Cuchillo Dam, found downstream of the Santa Catarina River basin as a surface source of drinking water for the city, renders this river an interesting site for asses...
This book contains the result of the contributions of the colaboration of the Geo-Network of Latin American - German Alumni, presented in the GOAL Workshop 2017 in Mexico
This research deals with the quality of natural waters affected by pollution from leachate generated in the Municipal Landfill of Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The Municipal Landfill of Linares has more than 17 years of service and receives more than 50 ton/day of municipal solid waste. Geological (geological structural profiles), hydrogeological (p...

Preventive management of groundwater resources and their protection against pollution is one of the major challenges of our society. Groundwater systems are related with the surficial processes like territorial administration that is one of the most important tasks into the human development, because it involves serious problems to define the spati...
The aim of this research paper was to identify whether the water quality had been influenced either by the natural en-vironment or by anthropogenic activities or both in the municipality of Linares, the second largest city of the State of Nuevo Leon, NE Mexico. The superficial water (Pablillo River) and the groundwater quality (from a fractured and...
The North-East region of Mexican Republic has a semi-arid weather condition; this area covers partially Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila states. Pablillo River Basin (PRB) is located close to Nuevo León south border and its catchment area involves Linares City (LC), Hualahuises City (HC) and Cerro-Prieto dam (CP). This reservoir captures drinkin...
Urban expansion as a result of continuous population growth as well as the creation of a large variety of industries and the parallel high human population density require a sufficient supply of clean water. In many cities around the world groundwater is the main source of potable water. In turn, anthropogenic activities discharge large volumes of...
In northeast Mexico is Linares City, which has an extensive agricultural area and many industrial activities. Near this city is the Cerro-Prieto Dam (~12 km NE direction); this drinking water reservoir captures the water of the Pablillo River catchment area and constitutes an important source of potable water for the metropolitan area of Monterrey,...

Cerro Prieto Dam, a small water reservoir in the NE Mexico, is characterized by very high velocity of recent sedimentation, high sub-bottom seepage and erosion, and as a result, nonlinear water balance. These phenomenons never were studied since construction of the dam in the beginning of 1980th. So the goal of our work was to investigate the botto...
The Pablillo basin is part of the Coastal Plane of NE Gulf of Mexico in the Sierra Madre Oriental eastern foreland. Gravity and magnetic measurements were made in the Pablillo basin for the determination of the shallow as well as of deep structural characteristics of this area in relation to Cerro Prieto water reservoir, which is one of the main re...
This document presents basically three important aspects: the first one is related to the groundwater flow lines and the configuration of isohypse curves, in order to interpret the hydrodynamic behavior of the Huizachal aquifer. The second one is associated with the determination of the hydrogeochemical origin of springs and aquifers in the area of...
The geographical location of the State of Nuevo Leon, due to its
physiographic features, has temperate and arid climate; undeveloped
drainage, low precipitations, and high evapotranspiration rates, as well
as rapid demographic growth. The hydrological data of the Pablillo
basin, registered in the hydrometric station Cerro Prieto, showed an
annual p...
Solid wastes generated by the population of Linares were deposited in the municipal landfill during the last 21 years. Water quality was analyzed in water samples extracted from several hydraulic wells located near the landfill, as well as in areas where other pollution sources exist (barite deposits, pig farms, septic tanks and latrines). Taking s...
Based on a geological structural study, is determined the importance presented by the lithological and structural discontinuities of the rocky massif used as natural dam (Loma Los Pozos), for El Cuchillo Solidaridad reservoir. The Loma Los Pozos is made up of an alternating sequence of Tertiary shale and sandstone within the geological province of...
