Introduction
Current research interests include sustainable forest development in Canada and globally, including research on tree planting, bioenergy, wildfire, and forest disease/forest infestations. My research also includes development of spatial models of climate variables to provide support for researchers inside and outside the Canadian Forest Service investigating climate and climate change impacts.

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was likely introduced to North America in the early 1990s and has since become a highly destructive invasive forest pest. From 2002 onwards, federal quarantines have regulated the movement of at-risk ash commodities in both Canada and the United States (U.S.). Despite these regulations, the EAB has spread rapidly from Mi...

Background Every year, people in Canada are evacuated due to wildland fires to avoid death, injury, and illness from fire and smoke events. Aims In this paper, we provide an overview of evacuations recorded in the Canadian Wildland Fire Evacuation Database between 1980 and 2021. Methods Our analysis covers evacuations in Canada from 1980 to 2021....

1991-2020 monthly mean maximum/minimum temperature and precipitation were gridded for Canada and the continental United States using thin plate smoothing splines developed using ANUSPLIN. These models rely upon monthly weather station values from the North American dataset published by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Nati...

Forest transition theory, as introduced by Alexander Mather, depicts forest recovery patterns often occurring in the wake of agricultural intensification and farmland abandonment. Since the forest transition theory was introduced, multiple pathways have been described in the scholarly literature to explain forest transition phases via varied socio-...

Heating degree days (HDD) represent a concise measure of heating energy requirements used to inform decision making about the impact of climate change on heating energy demand. This data paper presents spatial datasets of heating degree days (HDD) for Canada for two thirty-year periods, 1951–1980 and 1981–2010, using daily temperature gauge observa...

Abstract The importance of human behavior in biodiversity conservation is widely recognized, but there is little published evidence about how conservation professionals make decisions when conservation values are at stake. We take a behavioral economics approach, administering simplified decision problems (“choice experiments”), questions about cho...

The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) has a mandate to share its full breadth of scientific knowledge concerning Canada’s forests broadly, with citizens, as well as narrowly, with organizations responsible for managing forests. Measuring the impact of CFS research in policy-making both nationally and internationally can be challenging, as policies may...

Replacement of fossil fuels with bioenergy, often in concert with carbon capture and storage, plays an important role in published low-emission pathways from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other agencies. National and regional net-zero greenhouse gas emission commitments have caused a dramatic increase in forest biomass co...

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Agrilus plaipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) was introduced to North America more than two decades ago and has spread despite management efforts in both the United States and Canada. The insect kills most species of ash tree (Fraxinus sp.) and its management imposes costs to plant health protection agencies, forest indu...

Satellite data-driven discoveries are fuelling the literature on forest transitions, particularly in quantifying slow, large-scale trends. Mather’s forest transition concept depicts the inflection point marking a change from decreasing to increasing forest area. This theory is being elucidated using satellite images of global forest cover from the...
