Wahlberg’s Eagle Aquila wahlbergi is an African raptor species distributed south of the Sahara. The first Western Palearctic (WP) record was on 3 May 2013, when a pale-morph juvenile was photographed on the west coast of Gulf of Suez near Ras Shuqeir, c 120 km north of Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt. This paper documents the second and third WP record (‘...
Aerial surveys to estimate the abundance of Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena were conducted on the Dutch Continental Shelf in summer 2019. These surveys followed predetermined track lines in four areas: A - Dogger Bank, B - Offshore, C - Frisian Front & D - Delta. Between 16 July and 4 August the entire Dutch Continental Shelf (DCS) was surveyed.
The subpopulation of the bowhead whale Balaena mysticetus in the East Greenland-Svalbard-Barents Sea is endangered and until recently was believed to number in the tens. Recent studies have suggested that this subpopulation appears to be increasing. Here, we report on unusual aggregations of bowhead whales within the Fram Strait. We present opportu...

The occurrence of basking sharks in the Caribbean Sea is only recently documented by satellite tagging studies, which show that some individuals migrate through the region en route from waters off the east coast of the USA to waters off northeastern South-America. The observation of a basking shark on 7 November 2013 ca. 130 km north-northeast of A...
The avifauna of the Dutch Caribbean island of St. Eustatius has been little studied. We document 22 new bird species for the island and update the status of several important species based on our recent observations. The documented avifauna of
the island amounts to 75 published species records. We conclude by pointing out several positive developme...

During the RV Polarstern PS 89 (ANT-XXX/2) expedition from Cape Town to Atka Bay and back,
20 sightings of 26 individual blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) were recorded in Antarctic waters
west of the Greenwich Meridian between 16-20 January 2015. These observations suggest a more
westerly extension of a reported hot spot between the Greenwich Me...
In accordance with the monitoring and evaluation plan (MEP) for the ‘Gemini Offshore Wind Farm’ the ecological monitoring of harbour porpoises was carried out by IMARES and IBL Umweltplanung, concerning the distribution and numbers of harbour porpoises in and around the wind farm prior to construction (T-0). For this purpose aerial surveys as well...

Little is known about migration patterns and seasonal distribution away from coastal summer feeding habitats of many pelagic baleen whales. Recently, large-scale passive acoustic monitoring networks have become available to explore migration patterns and identify critical habitats of these species. North Atlantic minke whales (Balaenoptera acutoros...
Little is known about the distribution of small cetaceans in the offshore areas of the North Sea. However, information on abundance and distribution is essential to assess the impact of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors, to infer on the conservation status and to identify areas of high ecological importance for the species involved....

In November 2013 aerial surveys were conducted for the first time in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire to evaluate aerial surveys as a tool for marine mammal surveys in these waters, and to assess the distribution and abundance of marine mammals. A secondary aim of these surveys was to collect data on the occurrence of other...

Marine mammals spend most of their time underwater which sometimes makes it difficult to detect them from the surface. At the same time, most cetaceans (toothed and baleen whales) produce a variety of sounds underwater and since sound travels easily in water, these sounds can normally be picked up even at distances beyond those of visual detection....

This research project aimed at mapping avifauna and cetaceans along the shelf break was carried out
during a unique period of extremely low fishing activity of the industrial fleet. This allowed the researchers to
describe the distribution and feeding ecology of wintering seabirds, marine mammals and other mega fauna in
Mauritanian waters in an alm...
In October 2011 an expedition took place to the Saba Bank, on board of the ship the Caribbean Explorer II. Main aim of the expedition was collecting data on underwater fauna and coral reefs. Apart from that data were collected on nutrients, water flow, sponges and seabirds and marine mammals. Data on the last group were collected by deploying acous...
To investigate harbour porpoise density and distribution in Dutch waters, dedicated line transect distance sampling aerial surveys were conducted from May 2008 to March 2010. In total 10,557 km were covered on survey effort during 16 survey days in February to May, August, November and December. Using line-transect distance sampling techniques, por...

The razor clam Ensis directus was introduced to Europe presumably as larvae in ballast water around 1978. Starting in the German Bight it spread northward and southward along the continental coastline. Currently it is the most common shellfish species in the Dutch coastal zone, where it mainly occurs in the Voordelta and off the Wadden Sea islands....

The Dutch consortium "NoordzeeWind" operates the first offshore wind farm in Dutch North Sea waters. The park, consisting of 36 turbines on monopiles, is located NW of IJmuiden harbour, some 8 NM off the Dutch mainland coast. Named after the nearest town ashore, the park will be known as "Offshore Wind farm Egmond aan Zee" (OWEZ). A second offshore...
Aerial surveys were conducted to investigate harbour porpoise density and distribution in Dutch waters. Surveys were conducted following standard line transect distance sampling methodology on tracklines providing a representative coverage of the study area which ranged from the Dutch coast to about 120 km offshore thus covering about half of the D...
