Several efforts have been undertaken to define generic guidelines that address specific gaps in the ‘build’ activity of Design Science Research (DSR) artifacts, i.e., constructs, models, methods and frameworks , and instantiations. Unfortunately, explicit guidance is still lacking on how to coherently operationalize such guidelines when building a...
A number of real-life applications of the DEMO methodology are presented, varying in size and impact and in the industrial area that they concern. The selected applications are (1) the VISI Standard in Civil Engineering; (2) getting firm grip on software development; (3) Agile Law Making; (4) Enterprise Transformation; (5) Designing Data Warehouses...
The case Library is an exercise in producing the essential model of an enterprise that offers the obtaining of usufruct of tangible things (borrowing books) and the creating of intangible things (starting and ending memberships). By applying the OER method to the narrative case description, the information is achieved on the basis of which the esse...
The EE information theory or FI theory is about factual knowledge and about information in general. The basis for the FI theory consists of Ogden and Richard’s semiotic triangle and Stamper’s semiotic triangle. They clarify that information is a dyadic notion: it is the inseparable combination of content (the communicated thought) and form (the sig...
The EE Organisational Operation Theory or PSI theory is a theory about the operation of organisations. PSI stands for Performing in Social Interaction. Based on the CIAO Paradigm (Communication, Information, Action and Organisation), a communication-centric view is taken on the cooperation of people in enterprises, as manifested in business process...
A history of the Organisational Sciences is sketched, along with a history of the ICT Sciences (comprising Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, etc.). The first one starts with the famous publication by Frederick Taylor in 1911. The history of the ICT Sciences begins in the late 1950s, with the first use of computers in...
The EE organisational essence theory, or ALPHA theory, is a theory about the distinction of layers of transactor roles in an organisation, based on the sort of production that transactors bring about: original, informational, documental or material. Original production comprises all production acts that result in original new facts. Examples are de...
The EE Organisational Construction Theory, also called OMEGA theory, is a theory about the modular structures that can be distinguished in organisations. Based on the organisational building block (the transactor role) from the PSI theory (cf. Chap. 8), three kinds of coordination structures are identified and discussed: interaction structure, inte...
The EE model theory or MU theory is a theory of models and modelling in general and of conceptual modelling in particular. The foundations part starts with this definition of model: any subject using a system A to obtain knowledge of a system B is using A as a model of B. It conveys clearly the basic understanding of the notion of model as a role n...
The case Pizzeria is an exercise in understanding and applying the full potential of abstracting from realisation and implementation, and thus focusing on the O-organisation of an enterprise. In the course of its existence, the pizzeria passes through three phases. The transition from the first to the second phase means a change in the essential mo...
The case GloLog is an exercise in producing the essential model of an enterprise that offers the transporting and storing of tangible things: goods, containers, ships. The CM, PM and FM of the GloLog organisation are presented and discussed. Emphasis is put on four topics. The first is the unavoidable need to conceive notions that are not present i...
In this chapter, DEMO is presented (Design and Engineering Methodology for Organisations), in order to produce the essential model of an enterprise or in general of a Scope of Interest (which may cover a part of one enterprise or of a network of enterprises). Like every proper methodology, DEMO comprises a Way of Thinking (WoT), a Way of Modelling...
The case PoliGyn is an exercise in producing the essential model of an enterprise that offers the creation of (tangible and intangible) things: producing diagnoses and performing clinical and sonographic examinations. The CM, PM and FM are (partially) presented and discussed. Three, basically general, topics are elaborated, because they have a typi...
A number of contributions are presented in which DEMO is used in combination with an existing and well-accepted approach or activity in the broad field of enterprise engineering, all resulting in improving the quality of the other approach or activity. The selected contributions are (1) DEMO enhanced Agile Software Development, (2) DEMO enhanced Le...
The foundations of the discipline of enterprise engineering (EE), as envisioned by the Ciao Network, consist of the CIAO Paradigm and a number of theories. After the discussion of the paradigm, which has its origins in the communication-centric view on information systems engineering that emerged around 2000, the role of the EE theories and their r...
Enterprise Ontology is the name of a scientific discipline that offers a sound theoretical foundation to understanding the construction and operation of enterprises. In contrast to the general notion of ontology, which is about the essence of almost everything, Enterprise Ontology offers a coherent, comprehensive, consistent and concise understandi...
Because of their increasing complexities, modern societies have an urgent need for the discipline of Enterprise Engineering. Despite their age, the ideas of Frederic Taylor still determine the mindset of managers: a machine-like understanding of organisations still dominates managerial practice. The discipline of Enterprise Engineering offers three...
The EE systems theory is about the behaviour, the construction and the operation of systems. Systems are classified into three regions: organised simplicity, organised complexity and unorganised complexity. The definition of a (homogeneous) system is presented as a triple (C, E, S), where C is a set of elements of some category, E is a set of eleme...
The case Fixit is an exercise in understanding and applying the full potential of the complete transaction pattern, including the revocation patterns and the consequent roll-backs of the main business process. The analysis of the case demonstrates and clarifies that the complete transaction pattern covers all ‘exceptional’ situations, which, in cur...
The case Rent-A-Car is an exercise in producing the essential model of an enterprise that offers the usufruct of tangible things: Rent-A-Car is a company that rents cars to customers. By applying the OER method to the narrative case description, one acquires the knowledge to produce the essential model of the enterprise. All four aspect models (CM,...
The EE function-construction theory or TAO theory (T-theory) is a theory about the way subjects (people) perceive the things that surround them. TAO stands for Teleology, Affordance and Ontology. The foundations part starts with an excerpt from Gibson’s theory of affordances. This theory clarifies the subjectivity of affordances. Next, the intended...
Physical assets hold an integral role both in society and for stakeholders, necessitating effective management systems like the ISO 55000 standards introduced by the ISO. Despite the increased focus on implementing and sustaining these systems, they do not offer explicit guidance on design or implementation within an organisation. Empirical data an...
Today’s organizations are a complex knot of people, processes, rules, IT, responsibilities, tasks, and much more. Complexity begets inefficiencies, so to transform our businesses we need a new generation of organizational tools that lead to greater efficiency. Digital transformation is defined as: “Transformation of the enterprise with a major impa...

This paper is the result of unique and extensive research for identifying the best methods for modernizing mission-critical application software. We have concluded that projects using the principles of what we call “Infinite Flow” (a continuous process, unlike projects that are designed as one-time events with a beginning and an end) achieve superi...

By revealing the essence of an enterprise’s organisation, enterprise ontology addresses business processes...

Large and grand IT projects seem to fail worldwide. Several studies researched the indicators of success and failure on a national level, but there is little international comparative research. What if governments could apply international lessons learned when starting their IT projects? We assessed the factors of success of 110 projects in the Net...
Architecture is important to reduce the complexity of organizations and information systems. However, many organizations are faced with the problem that the architecture itself is not transparent.
Lack of shared understanding among stakeholders is a commonly cited drawback in enterprise architecture development. Stakeholders need to have shared understanding of requirements and principles for an enterprise architecture, and the extent to which the resultant architecture addresses their concerns. However, existing approaches for enterprise ar...

GSS can support bringing more insights to business information security viewpoints, eliciting the right level of urgency and collecting the evidence during the meeting. This substantiates a smart decision-making process. By achieving a mutual level of knowledge, directors and managers are able to strip away the jargon of the security professionals...
The Standish Group started in 1985 in the business of IT market forecasts and predictions using Artificial Intelligence and cased-based reasoning technology. In 1994, we turned to predicting project outcomes, improving software development, and building a world-class database. Standish's cumulative research encompasses 22 years of data on why proje...
The successes of large-scale transaction applications and systems have been an important driver of the digital world over the past decades. But their development and particularly their maintenance remain challenging, with development requiring huge amounts of resources and a lack of evolvability resulting in most large organizations having a substa...
The Standish Group has been formally researching the causes of software project success and failure since 1994 [1]. Prior to this date very little research was done and the problems of software project failure were hidden due to lack of transparency. 1 Standish's cumulative research encompasses 22 years of data on why projects succeed or fail, repr...

Besluitvorming tijdens vergaderingen is een ongrijpbaar fenomeen. Zo definieerde Thomas Kayser vergaderingen als “a gathering where people speak up, say nothing, and then all disagree”.

Daarnaast is...
Recently the announcement of the “conclusions and recommendations of the Dutch temporary committee on government ICT projects” revealed an inconvenient truth: The investment in ICT projects has not produced the useful and valuable results expected. Emotional maturity involves having an ecosystem that supports the skills to be self-aware, socially aware, self-managed, and able to manage relationships. These are all important skills for a healthy project ecosystem. To fully exploit these skills, project leaders, executives, and all stakeholders need to know how to deal with the frailties of hum...
SMALL PROJECTS: deliver big value.
A small project has between six and eight team members, lasts no longer than six months, and costs no more than $1 million in normalized labor. Small projects have a higher than average value rating because the size constraint limits the functions and features to the most important and valuable. Large or larger p...
Modernization in Place is to modernize an application or system while it is fully functional and being used by the organization and its customers. While this might sound like you’re trying to replace a jet engine in flight, Modernization in Place is hardly that difficult or dangerous. It might also seem like you would need lots of planning and anal...

In many of the latest Standish Group reports we discuss the merits and benefits of small, lean projects. These projects deliver impactful results. We also look at projects that are the polar opposite-feature-fat projects that frequently don't deliver the desired results, or simply fail. "Fat" tools can also suffer from the same problems as "fat" pr...
You want your projects to be more successful, with higher value and greater customer satisfaction. For the last 20 years we have published the key Factors of Success. In a follow-up to our Double Dog Dare post, we are comparing small projects to bicycle rides. Many projects are naturally small. In many parts of the world people commonly ride bicycles for transportation. In other parts of the world it takes a little more effort to encourage and make bicycles safe for transportation. For example, Holland has built...
