Introduction
My long term research interests are: 1) Methods and methodologies of forward looking studies: scenario analysis, simulation, combination of ‘qualitative’ and ‘quantitative’ approaches. 2) Integration of interdisciplinary knowledge, transdisciplinarity, participation. 3) Environmental sociology, sociology of risk, technology assessment - and always with a focus on water governance issues. Currently, I am working on water and land use conflicts, qualitative systems analysis, and policy design.

This paper reviews the latest research on scenarios including the processes and products for socio-environmental systems (SES) analysis, modeling and decision making. A group of scenario researchers and practitioners participated in a workshop to discuss consolidation of existing research on the development and use of scenario analysis in exploring...

Linking qualitative scenarios with quantitative models is a common approach to integrate assumptions on possible future societal contexts into modeling. But reflection on how and to what degree knowledge is effectively integrated during this endeavor does not generally take place. In this paper, we reflect on the performance of a specific hybrid sc...

Wicked problems continuously emerge in the field of environmental governance. Characterized by goal conflicts, complexity, and uncertainty, wicked problems typically call for participatory policy designs. However, the effects of participation are widely unclear, given the indefinite nature of solutions to wicked problems. This research sheds light...

Environmental governance often requires fulfilling different objectives at the same time, as environmental but also economic and social objectives of different actors and on different scales. That means, it needs to address (potential) goal conflicts. This challenge of how to achieve policy coherence is currently discussed regarding the United Nati...

Commercial land use management that focuses on a future-oriented urban and regional devel-opment must address multiple goals. Effective policy mixes need to simultaneously (1) improve city-regional and inter-municipal cooperation, (2) reduce land take, and (3) assure the long-term economic development of a region. Using the Northern Black Forest in...

Many of the current scenario studies on future water extremes do not seem to adequately address their emerging wickedness. Instead, they often focus on one of the extremes: floods or droughts or pollution, but not on the complexity of interlinkages between extremes. Also, very few studies seem to integrate the natural and the social science perspec...

Responsible research and innovation (RRI) approaches that have emerged in the past ten years point to the importance of engaging the public in dialogues about research. The different variants of RRI share the notion that societal actors, including citizens, need to work together – that is, engage in two-way communication during the research and inn...

According to the UN SDG 6, the universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation should be achieved by 2030. This is especially a challenge in prosperous regions with water scarcity, like Lima/Peru. Within the TRUST project, solutions for water supply and wastewater management are developed for the catchment of the Lurín River near Lima. In t...

This poster summarizes a new methodology to analyze water use conflicts and to identify conflict free policy mixes. It adapts a qualitative form of systems analysis (CIB) and focusses on promoting and hindering interrelations on the level of alternative policies. The approach is currently tested in the catchment area of the river Lurín, Peru.

Innovative solutions and planning tools for safe drinking water supply and sustainable wastewater management are the focus of the Trust project. In many prosperous regions of the world, population and economic growth in combination with competing water demand often lead to water scarcity, i.e. higher abstraction than natural regeneration. Model-based energy scenarios are a widely used tool for supporting economic and political decision makers. The results of energy modeling and the conclusions deduced therefrom, however, depend on the model input data derived from framework assumptions about future developments in the embedding society, which are deeply uncertain in the long term. This paper proposes two criteria to assess and compare the quality of (integrated) scenarios, namely scenario traceability and scenario consistency. From a futures research perspective, both are identified as being central challenges to scenario quality. In this paper, the quality criteria developed in the ACCESS project to assess the methodological combination of cross-impact balance analysis and simulation ('CIB&S') are exposed. As a consequence of climate change, conflicts over groundwater and surface water are expected to increase in Germany in the future. As part of the Ladenburger Kolleg of the Daimler and Benz Foundation, a joint project coordinated by ZIRIUS is researching these possible conflicts. With the help of participatory modeling and serious gaming, future contexts and actor strategies are examined in their interrelations.
Archived project
This project dealt with the uncertainty and interdependence of framework assumptions in environmental model calculations. Model framework assumptions are often used in modeling practice without a systematic analysis of their mutual influence relationships and thus affect the validity of the model results. In this project, commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency, it was demonstrated how the CIB procedure can be used to develop systematically constructed and internally consistent framework data sets for environmental models.
Archived project
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established by the European Parliament to identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health from communicable diseases. In order to inform key stakeholders and guide future planning on the key threats from communicable diseases facing the European Union, the ECDC issued a tender for consulting services which was won by IZT, the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment. The key purposes of this project are to: 1) identify plausible scenarios of infectious disease threats facing the EU in the year 2020; 2) comprehensively identify and analyze emerging vulnerabilities, opportunities and strengths relating to these scenarios; 3) include relevant stakeholder groups in the scenario process; integrate expert and practitioner knowledge in order to validate and refine the scenarios.
