Introduction
Understanding the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of nanoscale metallic nanopillars and wires is a significant concern for designing reliable small devices that must resist loads in service. Micromechanical testing using a nanoindenter is used to examine the plastic behaviour of nano/mico-pillars with a range of diameters so as to reveal size dependent mechanical response and underlying connections between different physical variables through the experimental results.

The deformation behavior of single crystals of manganese pillars generated by focused ion beam (FIB), with diameters ranging from ~1 μm to ~4.5 μm, has been studied as a function of specimen size using micropillar compression at ambient temperature. The manganese pillars were machined from randomly chosen larger grains of polycrystalline metal. At...
Micropillar compression experiments show size effect, σp/μ = A(d/b)n, where σp, is the flow stress, μ is the resolved shear modulus, d is the pillar diameter and b is Burgers’ vector. With fcc metals n ≈ –0.67 and A ≈ 0.7; however, with bcc metals there is greater variation, with n closer to zero. Here we propose a different but similar empirical r...
The tensile mechanical properties of silver nanowires produced by the polyol process and containing the characteristic pentatwinned microstructure are compared with single crystal nanowires prepared by template electrodeposition over a range of diameters, d, from 80 to 300 nm. The plastic flow strengths of both sets of nanowires show a significant...
The mechanical properties of the austenite and ferrite phases in a high Cr content 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) have been investigated using single crystal micropillars of size 200–2000 nm. Austenite pillars with axial orientation [123] show a strong size effect with strength increasing as pillar size decreases, following a power-law relation,...
In the present study, commercially available polycarbonate (PC) membranes with different pore diameters were used as a template for electrodeposition of iron nanowires. The iron nanowire forests with average diameters ranging from 125 to 800 nm and several microns in length have been fabricated by reduction of metal ions into the nano-channels of P...
In this study, surfaces of 1050 aluminium alloy were coated with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) reinforced electroless nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) composite coating and the effect of heat treatment on the coating structure for 1 hour at 400°C was investigated. Composite coatings were performed in solutions which consist of three different compositions...
The strength of focussed ion beam (FIB) machined [001] orientation single crystal micropillars of body centred cubic structured (bcc) metals Fe, Nb and V, with diameters 200 – 5000 nm, have been measured at 296 K and 193 K using nanoindentation equipment. The metals have similar critical temperatures for screw dislocation mobility, Tc, close to 350...
2D materials show considerable promise as high surface area electrodes for energy storage applications such as supercapacitors. A single sheet of graphene possesses a large specific surface area due to its atomically thin thickness. However, in order to package this area efficiently in a device, it must be confined within a finite 3D volume without...
Questions
Question (1)
I am working on single crystal bcc metal pillars diameters ranging from 300 nm to 5 microns. I am trying to clarify the effect of both Tc and DBTT on mechanical properties of bcc metals.
