Budidaya ikan baung saat ini sedang dikembangkan; teknologi pembenihan dan pembesaran telah tersedia; namun untuk mendapatkan pertumbuhan maksimum dan mutu daging yang baik, ikan ini memerlukan protein yang tinggi dalam dietnya. Tepung ikan merupakan sumber protein yang sangat disukai ikan baung; namun karena harga tepung ikan mahal dan sulit didapatkan maka substitusi tepung ikan dengan bahan lokal perlu diupayakan untuk efisiensi biaya dan kelancaran produksi ikan. Ikan rucah hasil tangkapan di laut (by-catch) memiliki potensi yang besar sebagai pengganti tepung ikan karena nilai proteinnya relatif tinggi, 14,4-20,8% dan pasokannya juga melimpah, diperkirakan lebih dari 3,33 juta ton setiap tahun atau 4-19 kali total tangkapan trawler dan sejenisnya di Indonesia. Namun produksinya tersebar dan untuk mengumpulkan dan mengolahnya menjadi tepung ikan diperlukan cara pengawetan yang murah dan praktis. Pengawetan ikan rucah dengan penggaraman merupakan cara yang murah dan praktis; dan penelitian pemberian pakan dalam keramba percobaan selama 8 minggu (penelitian tahap pertama) menunjukan ikan rucah bergaram dapat diinklusi dalam diet ikan baung sebagai pengganti tepung ikan sampai 50% tanpa mempengaruhi tingkat kelansungan hidup, pertambahan berat, efisiensi pakan dan utilisasi nutrien; dan inklusi 75% tidak mempengaruhi pertambahan berat dan kelansungan hidup akan tetapi menurunkan efisien pakan dan utilisasi nutrient. Namun, apakah pemberian diet ikan rucah bergaram dalam waktu yang lama (sampai ukuran panen) memberikan efek negatif terhadap pertumbuhan dan kualitas daging diperlukan penelitian lebih lanjut. Dalam penelitian tahap ke-dua ini, pengaruh inklusi ikan rucah bergaram dalam diet ikan rucah bergaram dieveluasi terhadap pertumbuhan, efisiensi pakan, utilisasi nutrien dan kualitas daging ikan hasil panen.
