Cold-tolerant and cold-loving microorganisms are important components of ecosystems in cold area or under cold conditions. These microorganisms use specific mechanisms to withstand cold stress and to perform well under such stress conditions. These mechanisms, which are mainly dependent on a variety of enzymes, are crucial for various industries fr...

Although biofertilizers have been used for an exceptionally long time, challenges still remain in using them to phase out chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers generate environmental pollution and negatively impact beneficial organisms as well as human and animal wellbeing, causing a paradigm shift towards safer improved biofertilizers. Hence,...

The rapid rate of industrialization has paved the path for green, smart, and organic products. In addition, the demand for agricultural products will grow heavily annually as the world's population is expected to reach around 9 billion in 2050. Organic food is commonly assumed to be more natural, an assumption that is among others based on its prod...

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are on the rise around the world, while this phenomenon is comparatively more prevalent in developing countries. It has been identified that this situation arose in developing countries owing to nutrition transitions and adaptation of a sedentary lifestyle, both of which are consequences of urbanization. While priori...

Background: Quantification of toxic trace metals in biota is very important to monitor both ecosystem health and public health. Stomopneustes variolaris is a widespread species of sea urchin in the world that have edible gonads that are in high demand. This study attempted to examine the levels of accumulated toxic trace metals and their relation-...

Among the eight species of Eutropis Fitzinger currently known from Sri Lanka, Eutropis bibronii (Gray, 1838) is among the least known. Hence, the occurrence of this species in Sri Lanka has been doubted by some authors since there were no confirmed records from live specimens for the past 70 years. The species has been previously reported mostly fr...

The Sri Lankan traditional medicinal system reaches back over 3000 years. The traditional medicines of Sri Lanka have gained an impressive level of acceptance over their more ‘Western’ counterparts, despite the lack of substantial scientific evidence. This is due mainly to cultural, folklore, habitual use, and ethological reasoning. One well respec...

The Diplopoda have been studied for some 250 years, but until the later part of the nineteenth century most descriptions were rather cursory and neither the species concept nor type concept were well established (Hoffman 2009). Even for well-explored regions like Europe, the description of the Diplopoda saw a proliferation of synonyms (Enghoff 1976...
