Introduction
I carry out research especially in Western Africa and in Latin America on three main topics:
•Farmers’ organizations: strategies, provision of services to farmers,
Farm management and advisory services : Methods to support farmers, to strengthen advisory service providers and to improve the coordination mechanisms between advisory actors.
•Regional “innovation systems”, linking economic players with research centres, advisory services, famers’ organizations, and private companies.

To promote greater sustainability in agriculture, development of agroecology is increasingly being invoked. What are the conditions for establishing agroecological production in tropical regions? Based upon case studies in several tropical areas, we provide here some answers to this question. We review the “pillars” (i.e. principles) and the “imple...
Agroecology has been recognized as a paradigm that can offer multiple ecological and socioeconomic benefits. In many developing countries, the promotion of agroecology is facilitated by intermediary organizations such as Farmers' Organizations (FOs). Detailed studies on how FOs support their farmers in the adoption of agroecology innovations are st...
Purpose
This article explores to what extent a Delphi consensus study can help in designing a framework for assessing agricultural innovation systems (AIS), and this in a perspective of transformation of these systems in a diversity of countries.
Approach
First, we reviewed the diversity of existing assessment methodologies in terms of their asses...
Applied agricultural research institutes play different roles in complex agricultural innovation processes, contributing to them with other actors. To foster learning and usable knowledge on how research actions influence such lasting innovation processes, there is a need to identify the causal mechanisms linking these actions and the effects of th...

Approach: Acknowledging the existence of a worldwide theoretical and practical expertise on different aspects of AIS, we applied a combi...
This chapter reports on the different functions fulfilled by existing mechanisms for supporting collective innovation in the agricultural and agrifood sectors in the countries of the Global South in order to identify the potential contributions the research community can make to strengthen them. The authors show that a variety of mechanisms are nee...
Over the last decade, societal pressure has increased on public research agencies to provide evidence that their research contributes to achieve development goals. To address this challenge, the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (Cirad), developed an ex-post impact assessment method based on the impact pathway approa...

Agricultural advisory services are important to improve farm performances and the farmers’ ability to innovate. However, their effectiveness is regularly called into question. In this chapter, we discuss the evolution of agricultural advisory services and show how the mechanisms and methods used to provide advice have changed over time. There exist...
Innovation is often presented as one of the main catalysts for more sustainable and inclusive development. In the agricultural and food sectors, innovation is characterized not only by specificities arising from its relationship to nature, but also from the wide diversity of its stakeholders, ranging from farmers to consumers, and including interme...
Most agricultural research organizations strive to address societal challenges and contribute to positive societal impacts. Fulfilling this ambition involves embedding a culture of impact in organizational culture, which, in our view, entails three main elements: understanding the role of the research community in contributing to impacts over the l...
In a context of a severe funding crisis, donors and policymakers expect increased accountability from research organizations and convincing proof that public investments in research have significant and positive societal impacts. This article takes stock of the lessons learned from the use of a method (ImpresS) designed by CIRAD to analyze the impa...
The role of agricultural advisory services (AAS) has considerably evolved during the last decades and a diversity of new innovation support service (ISS) functions has emerged. The plethora of new forms of ISS has one common feature, which is the activity of linking actors within the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS). So far, ther...
In Africa, farm advisory services are still dominated by the model of technology transfer. During the last two decades a new approach, based on adult learning methods, has been successfully introduced (Management Advice for Family Farms, or MAAF). The current challenge is to improve access to and the institutional and financial sustainability of MA...
Over the past decade, renewed societal demands on public research have been structured by various generic issues, while others are specific to the context of developing countries. In the first part of this article, after reviewing those issues, we examine how they reshape the analytical frameworks that structure the understanding of causal relation...
Capacity development for innovation is emerging as a new way to ensure sustainable development in developing countries. In the agricultural sector, innovation is essentially collective, which calls on researchers to step out of their role as producers of knowledge in order to engage with innovating actors. While a diversity of engaged research prac...
The aim of this article is to understand how advisory services addressing farm management issues can foster strategic thinking. We consider that the evolution of strategic thinking is related to the concept of proactivity. In Benin, we analyzed the impact of learning processes triggered by an approach called “management advice for family farms” (MA...

Applied research is under increasing pressure to demonstrate its social utility Agriculture is at the heart of many burning global issues, and agricultural research for development (AR4D) is increasingly called upon to address multiple social challenges related to demographic, food system, ecological and climate transitions. However, funding for AR...
The EU AgriSpin project aims at strengthening European capacities for innovation in the agricultural sector by taking into account the non-linear, complex and context-specific innovation processes. Brokering functions and new services are key in supporting actors to innovate by facilitating interactions for co-production of knowledge, co-design of...
Purpose: The private sector’s presence in agricultural advisory services worldwide has been on the increase for over three decades. Extension and advisory services (EAS) are well recognized as a key factor in contributing to agricultural productivity and growth. However, rigorous evaluation of EAS approaches and assessment of complex national or subnational pluralistic EAS systems are rare. This working paper examines the literature on experiential and empirical insights and ex...
The concept of sustainable agriculture aims to address the drawbacks of conventional agriculture by employing a systems approach. A systems perspective is essential to understanding sustainability, by giving the tools to explore the interconnections between the social and ecological system of the farming environment. In recent decades, a range of s...

In this paper, we wonder whether the implementation of agricultural advisory services (AAS) at grassroots level was influenced by the state, donors, service providers or rather by farmers. We selected three non government organizations, one farmer organisation and one public organisation providing services under different financing arrangements. We...

Management Advice for Family Farms (MAFF) is one of these approaches. MAFF has been adapted for diver...
This article examines how research on the agriculture and agrifood systems mobilizes the concept of Innovation System (IS). A literature review on the IS provides an analytical framework for determining its theoretical frame of reference, its area of application and its uses. Based on this framework, a bibliometric analysis of international journal...
