Maturity of the seeds can affect their potential longevity. It has been shown that components related to seed quality develop after the moment when the seed has reached its maximum dry mass, known as harvest maturity. In this state seeds have already developed critical adaptation mechanisms, such as detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS),...
Projections of warming temperatures as a consequence of climate change will have impacts on food production globally. This heat stress coupled with increased solar radiation, will affect the well-being of livestock. In many regions of the world, local breeds are reared as they demonstrate improved tolerance to local conditions resulting in minimal...
One of the projected effects of climate change is a reduction in rainfall in certain regions of the world. Hence, the agricultural and livestock sectors will have to cope with increasing incidences of water shortage while still maintaining productivity levels to feed an ever increasing global population. This short communication reports on the effe...

Contamination of water through salinization will affect the well-being of livestock. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how animals respond to increasing levels of salts in their water supply. This short communication describes the effects of a two-week salinity stress (0, 6, 12 g L− 1 NaCl) on Pelibuey sheep. The parameters measured in respo...
Biostimulants can increase yields in the ‘MD-2’ pineapple crop. The following work evaluated the effect of foliar application of a brassinosteroid analogue (Biobras-16) on the vegetative growth index of ‘MD-2’ pineapples plants and fruits. A biweekly foliar treatment of Biobras-16 at 2.0 mg L-1 was applied, at a rate of one liter every 160 plants o...
The examination of genetic stability is one of the most important issue in the evaluation of cryopreservation techniques. This research was aimed at determining if there are changes at the phenotypic and molecular level in tobacco plants derived from cryopreserved seeds. The seeds of the cultivar "Sancti Spíritus 96" were harvested 35 d after anthe...

Pineapple is an economically important tropical fruit crop, but the lack of adequate planting material limits its productivity. A range of micropropagation protocols has been developed over the years to address this shortfall. Still, the final stage of micropropagation, i.e. acclimatisation, remains a challenge as pineapple plantlets grow very slow...

The province of Ciego de Ávila is the one that has dedicated the largest area to this crop in Cuba. Currently Cuba exports to Europe fresh pineapple ´MD-2´ fruit, increasing these exports every year. However, in the summer months, the affectation of fruits by sunburn causes considerable economic losses. In this work the incidence of sunburn in pine...
In Cuba, the national production of pineapples (Ananas comosus var. comosus) was based exclusively on ‘Red Spanish’ for many years. In 2009 the ‘MD2’ hybrid (Gold Extra Sweet) was introduced. The adaptation of ‘MD2’ pineapple to the edaphic-climatic conditions of Ciego de Avila was successful, despite being sensitive to different factors such as dr...
A field experiment was carried out in the UEB Pineapple farm of Ceballos Agroindustrial Company (UEB; 21º47'N 78º4 8'W). Propagules of ‘MD-2’ pineapple (Ananas comosus var. comosus), approximately 300 g of fresh weight, were planted in 0.173 ha plots in March 2016. The planting density was 72,000 plants per hectare resulting in approximately 12,384...
Fertilization of vitroplants in the acclimatization stage is vital to achieve good adaptation to different conditions of in vitro culture. Pineapple has a 5 month period of acclimatization that can be diminished if new variants of fertilization are applied. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of three systems of foliar fertilization on...
To achieve good quality and adaptation of micropropagated plants to field conditions it is necessary that the acclimatization stage occurs without problems. At the Bioplantas Center the micropropagated pineapple (Ananas comosus var. comosus) is established a period of acclimatization of 5 months and the same could be reduced with the use of new fer...
Cryopreservation is a valuable technique for the long-term conservation of plant germplasm and complementary to traditional seed storage methods. However, critical factors such as seed moisture content should be optimized before using this technique as a safe strategy for storing seeds such as those of Nicotiana spp. This study aimed to determine t...
