Introduction
I got my PhD in Earth Sciences at University of Bologna (Italy). I work as Linux/Unix System Administrator at the University of Verona (Italy), where I'm also adjunct professor of Geology. In my free time, I do some research on the geology of the Lessini Mountains, North of Verona. Palaeokarst is currently my major topic of interest.

This guide shows how to create LaTeX documents that include several kinds of music elements, from very simple to quite complex. Music features may consist of music symbols, song lyrics, guitar chords diagrams, lead sheets, music excerpts, guitar tablatures, multi-page scores. Music can be produced directly by TeX and LaTeX using packages, and also...

The Lessini Mountains carbonate plateau (Venetian Prealps, Italy) is one of the most important karst areas in Italy. Along with alpine-type caves and well-developed karst landscapes, palaeokarst features are also common. In most cases, palaeokarst is represented by caves and fissures filled by limonitic-haematitic palaeosols (ochres) in which fossi...

The specimen under study, from the middle Miocene of Castel San Pietro, near V...

At the southern edge of the Lessini Mountains (Venetian Prealps,Italy), a well-developed palaeokarst network is found in the hills surroundingVerona, called Torricelle. Palaeokarst cavities are fossilizedby palaeosols of mostly limonitic composition ('yellow ochres'),which were mined for centuries for pigments. In the current interpretation, the age...

For most materials the dynamics of subcritical crack propagation during stress-corrosion can be described uniquely by a relationship between the mode-I stress intensity factor KI and the crack velocity v that generally has the form of a power law. In last 30 years, the double-torsion load-relaxation test has shown to be the most reliable method for...

The box-counting algorithm is the most commonly used method for evaluating the fractal dimension D of natural images. However, its application may easily lead to erroneous results. In a previous paper (Gonzato et al. 1998) we demonstrated that a crucial bias is introduced by insufficient sampling and/or by uncritical application of the regression t...

The results of a series of experiments aimed at characterizing the elastic and failure parameters of lava specimens from Mount Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli volcanos is presented. The double torsion—constant configuration—load relaxation method has been employed to obtain the behavior of the stress intensity factor versus mode I subcritical crack vel...

Fractal analysis is now common in many disciplines, but its actual application is often affected by methodological errors which can bias the results. These problems are commonly associated with the evaluation of the fractal dimension D and the range of scale invariance R. We show that by applying the most common algorithms for fractal analysis (Wal...

Driven by the great appeal of the potential capability to reduce very complex and highly erratic phenomenologies to simple deterministic and predictable processes, much effort has been devoted to studying chaotic systems. Unfortunately, such studies have been essentially theoretical, and the problem of detecting chaos in real time series has so far...

One of the truly novel issues in the physics of the last decade is that some time series considered of stochastic origin might in fact be of a particular deterministic type, named “chaotic”. Chaotic processes are essentially characterized by a low, rather than very high (as in stochastic processes), number of degrees of freedom. There has been a pr...

Rikitake's geodynamo model is used to generate synthetic series of geomagnetic reversals which are statistically compared with the real series of reversals. The model is found inadequate to represent reality.
