Project
Based on comparative perspective, this project aims to examine current research, teaching and policy trends in the International Relations (IR) communities in Southeast Asia by undertaking cross-national surveys of key representatives (including academics and researchers) in individual Southeast Asian countries. By analysing these current trends, the project seeks to reveal opportunities and challenges to the advancement of IR theory and practice within Southeast Asia by posing three main questions. 1) What are the existing teaching and research trends in Southeast Asian countries? 2) To what extent, do IR scholars in various Southeast Asian countries see the importance of advancing IR concepts and theories based on indigenous experiences? what are the main opportunities and challenges to the advancement of IR concepts and among Southeast Asian IR scholars and with IR scholars beyond the sub-region? 3) How have existing indigenous thought ignited conceptual and theoretical debates beyond the sub-region?

Project
The problem statement of this study is the lack of an International Relations (IR) theory model in Southeast Asian area studies. The existing Western IR theories dominate the discourse and facing inadequacy in addressing the phenomena and challenges faced by the East-Asian states in international affairs. Efforts have been made by Western and Asian IR specialists to fill the gap, but focuses are on Northeast Asian rather than the Southeast Asian context. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to build a comprehensive framework of IR theory building for Southeast Asia which is an area of high diversity in power, political systems, economic development, and threat perception. In order to fulfil the main objective, identifying key variables, constructing analytical tools, and developing conceptual devices are vital to set up explanatory propositions relevant to Southeast Asian inter-state issues. The outcome of this research will provide a comprehensive framework of IR theory model to study different issue areas central to Southeast Asian states which include foreign policy behaviour, inter- and intra-state conflicts, security-economy nexus, and bilateralism and multilateralism among ASEAN states.
