Introduction
Gretchen J. Summer-Gafford, PhD RN, is director and research scientist for Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California Nursing Research Community Benefit Program, Oakland, CA. In 2016, Dr. Summer-Gafford was appointed editor, Nursing Research and Practice, The Permanente Journal, a widely cited healthcare journal. Previously, she was a patient care-, charge-, and research-nurse, at the University of Washington Burn/Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle WA. Her PhD was awarded in 2005. Today, her focus is to advance healthcare knowledge by mentoring clinicians to obtain grants, design and conduct research, gain IRB approval, and disseminate their findings in posters, oral presentations, and journal publications.
