Currently, there is a particular interest in the study and identification of bioactive metabolites that can be used as phytomarkers in the standardization of fruit products consumed as natural alternatives for the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. In this investigation, the chemometric analyses of data obtained from the metabolic (1H‐NMR...
The emergence and reappearance of a growing number of diseases, together with the loss of biodiversity, have restructured bioprospecting methodologies when studying secondary metabolites, which continue to play a key role in the discovery of natural products with pharmacological activity. In this investigation, a combined approach using chemometric...
Melipona beecheii pot-pollen is a natural product that has barely been studied, unlike other hive products such as honey and propolis. Its application has been reported since ancient times in traditional Mayan medicine, and it is also a functional food with high nutritional value. In the present study, samples of ethanolic pot-pollen extracts from...
The present investigation establishes the basis for future studies in the southeast of México for the improvement of building materials by combining regional organic and inorganic nanoparticles in admixtures to formulate cement mortars with durability potential in structures of concrete. The characterization of the organic extract of Albzia tomento...
Due to the increasing populations of anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes and as a consequence of the adverse effects of synthetic drugs, this study focuses on the search for secondary metabolites with nematocidal activity from the edible mushroom Pleurotus djamor using The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR) metabolomics. The...
In tropical regions, high light levels can lead to increased photooxidative damage in plants. Thus, reducing solar radiation could have a substantial impact on crop performance. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological responses and metabolic profile of two tomato varieties grown in microenvironments modified with cover meshes under a high li...
In this work, a new low-toxicity nanocontainer is proposed to functionalize an epoxy coating. The nanocontainer is made up of 1) a hierarchical mesoporous structure of ZnO, 2) the Mimosa tenuiflora [Mt] extract, and 3) a tannic acid-iron complex (Fe-TA). The performance of the modified coating with ZnO/[Mt]@Fe-TA nanocontainers sprayed on low-carbo...
Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1) (Family Mininucleoviridae) causes chronic and systemic infection in wild juvenile spiny lobsters Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804), ending in death by starvation and metabolic wasting. In marine decapods, the antennal gland is involved in osmoregulation and excretion. In this compact organ, fluid is filtered from the...
One of the major unknowns regarding the ancient Maya practice of dental inlaying is the nature of the cement, used to affix small stones inside artificially drilled cavities on labial tooth surfaces. These cements endured the harsh buccal environment of a lifespan and secured the inlay firmly in the tooth even through centuries of subsequent postmo...
The funerary rites of particular members of the pre-Hispanic Mayan society included the pigmentation of the corpse with a red color. In order to understand this ritual, it is first necessary to identify the constituents of the pigment mixture and then, based on its properties, analyze the possible form and moment of application. In the present appr...
Substituted phenylacetic (1–3), phenylpropanoic (4–6), and benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-dione (7–9) derivatives were designed according to a multitarget unified pharmacophore pattern that has shown robust antidiabetic activity. This bioactivity is due to the simultaneous polypharmacological stimulation of receptors PPARα, PPARγ, and GPR40 and the en...
The genus Sargassum is well represented by benthic and pelagic species, some of which forms massive aggregates that can travel large distances due to the force of the ocean currents. Although they constitute an essential habitat for fish and invertebrate species, large accumulations of Sargassum in coastal areas generates several economic, environm...
In the present study, the leaves of Manilkara zapota (L.) P. Royen (Sapotaceae), an evergreen tree recognized for its medicinal properties in Southern Mexico, were used as a model to study the effect of different drying temperatures on its metabolic profile and therefore, its antioxidant potential. For this purpose, a methanol extraction of leaves...
This study assessed the in vitro anthelmintic (AH) activity of methanol and acetone:water leaf extracts from Annona squamosa , A. muricata and A. reticulata against Haemonchus contortus eggs. The egg hatch test was used to determine the effective concentrations required to inhibit 50% of eggs hatching (EC 50 ). The role of polyphenols on AH activit...
The Yucatan Peninsula possesses a unique climate, geology, landscape, and biota that includes a distinct flora of over 2300 species; of these, close to 800 plants are used in what is known as Mayan traditional medicine, and about 170 are listed as native or endemic. Even though the flora of the Yucatan peninsula has been widely studied by naturalis...
The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a carnivorous cetacean thriving in marine environment that is one of the apex predators of the marine food web. They are found in coastal and estuarine ecosystems which are known to be sensitive to environmental impacts. Dolphins are considered sentinel organisms for monitoring the health of coa...
Nuclear magnetic resonance has evolved into a spectroscopic technique that makes the identification of a natural product possible in a relatively short period of time. Currently, the advances in instrumentation and in pulse sequence development produce better spectra and experiments that provide a great deal of information about the chemical struct...
Introduction:
Tannin-rich forages are recognised as an important alternative for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants. Lysiloma latisiliquum, a forage commonly consumed by goats and sheep, has shown anthelmintic activity when tested against Haemonchus contortus. However, to date, the metabolites responsible for the activity...
It has been suggested that the anthelmintic (AH) activity of tannin-rich forages is related to their tannin content. However, reports on tropical fodders such as Lysiloma latisiliquum describe the same AH activity after the addition of tannin-blocking agents, suggesting that the activity either depends on the method of tannin blocking/removal or is...
The tropical deciduous forest (TDF) of Yucatán, Mexico, is a valuable natural resource that provides environmental services and different products for the benefit of humans. The present work provides information concerning the TDF as a natural resource that could be well suited for ruminant production. We firstly describe the characteristics of the...
Tannin-rich forages have been recently investigated as a valuable alternative for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants. It has been suggested that the anthelmintic activity (AH) exhibited by these materials is related to their tannin content, particularly that of condensed tannins (CT). However, reports on the use of tropica...
Aphelandra scabra (Vahl) Sm., Acanthaceae, is a shrub widely used by some Mayan communities as carminative, antidote, and remedy for some infections. Bio-guided isolation of the methanol extract of leaves led us to the purification of the anti-giardial metabolites cirsimaritin and sorbifolin, along with the inactive metabolites cirsimarin, sorbifol...
The use of local resources for food and health care of animals is a highly profitable and sustainable strategy. Among these resources are native trees and shrubs which in addition to providing good quality nutrients, produce secondary metabolites with anthelmintic (AH) effect. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro AH effect o...
