Bioenergy can significantly contribute to facilitating the transition to a self-sufficient low-carbon energy sector in Europe. The establishment of sustainable bioenergy systems needs ex-ante analysis that considers specific contexts and potential trade-offs, including competing uses of natural resources such as land, water and energy. The use of m...
Global palm oil demand for energy, food, and chemical uses has led to a rapid expansion of tree plantations in Southeast Asia, Central Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. This oil tree is the world’s most productive, highly profitable and traded vegetable oil crop, and the demand is expected to increase further in the near future. Nevertheless...

Global food demand will increase by nearly 50% during the
next 30 years. Sustainably meeting future food demand,
which is at the core of SDG 2, requires human civilization to
increase crop yields on existing cropland and ensure that
the most productive croplands around the world remain
under production. However, as co...
Highly managed Mediterranean river basins are facing considerable environmental management challenges. Water resource managers are increasingly concerned about the allocation of limited water resources, environmental quality concerns and planning under present and future climatic change and uncertainty. We implemented a watershed-scale eco-hydrolog...
Large land areas in European countries can be considered marginal, underutilized, and contaminated (MUC). Many recent studies have shown that bioenergy crop cultivation can make this land profitable, creating new income opportunities for local citizens without interfering with food production. However, farmers, landowners, and local communities mus...
It is increasingly recognized that land use and land cover changes driven by anthropogenic pressures are increasingly impacting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and their services, human society, and human livelihoods and well-being. Mapping and monitoring land use and land cover change dynamics are essential for preserving the environment and na...
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) enables the simulation of watershed and river basin quantity and quality of surface and ground water under the influence of land use, management, and climate change.

Extensive surfaces of land are currently under-utilized, marginal and/or contaminated (MUC) in many EU and neighbouring countries. In the past few years, scientific research has demonstrated that bioenergy crops can potentially render this land profitable, generating income for the local populations and, at the same time, reaching the goals of the...
Bioenergy represents the highest share of renewable energies consumed in the European Union and is still expected to grow. This could be possible by exploring bioenergy production on Marginal, Underutilised, and Contaminated lands (MUC) that are not used for agricultural purposes and therefore, present no competition with food/feed production. In t...
Several EU and neighboring countries have relevant surfaces of land that are currently largely marginal, under-utilized and/or contaminated (MUC). In the last decade, many scientific studies have demonstrated how bioenergy crops have the potential to be grown profitably on this land and can therefore offer a source of income to local populations wh...
The COVID-19 emergency has revealed the extreme fragility of large cities to unexpected complex global risks and crises. City lockdown has led to increasing awareness of the vital importance of food availability for citizens. The combined effect of border closure and movement restrictions increased food losses and export costs, especially for veget...
Over the past decade, a growing body of literature recognizes the importance of urban agriculture (UA) as relevant phenomenon able to interconnect a range of environmental, economic, and social issues in urban areas. Dear all,
Does anyone of you know a tool for dissolving/eliminate small polygons by combining them with larger adjacent polygons? In the past I used the tool "Dissolve Adj. Polys" by Jenness Enterprise (http://www.jennessent.com/arcview/dissolve_adjacent_polys.htm) and it worked very well. However, it worked with ArcView3.x and now with the ArcGIS 10.x I don't know how to do it and setting minimum mapping unit quickly and efficiently.
Do you know a tool or software for this operation?
Thanks
I have a soil map with 20 map units for a study area in Sardinia (Italy) and I would like to convert these units (taxonomic) classified as FAO and USDA (e.g. Eutric and Calcic Vertisols FAO legend 1988; Typic Pelloxererts int. Xerofluvents USDA soil taxonomy 1988) for ArcSWAT input.
I would like to create a lookup table for associate my map units like as SSURGO (mukey) soil map tipically used in SWAT for US soils; attached the legend of my map.
Any suggestions? thanks
I would like to know if in southern Europe price volatility (commodity prices, commodities bubble) has led to a reduction in the cultivated area under cereals and durum wheat, especially for the period 2007-2013.
Hi, I want to make one or more density maps (GIS) on urban agriculture in Rome, I have 4000 polygons differentiated by types (community garden, residential garden etc.) and uses (horticulture, vineyards, olive groves etc.). I thought firstly to kernel density to represent the area density, anyone have other ideas?
Regards
Giuseppe
