Introduction
I am a forest ecologist, my main interests are the ecological dynamics linked to different forms of management, their modification or interruption at ecosystem level on different temporal and spatial scales. My research focuses mainly on Botany (vegetation dynamics, floristic and taxonomic studies), Pedology (humus forms, soil ecology), Ecology (ecological dynamics, soil-vegetation relationships) and Forestry ( forest planning, management and restoration).

In this article, we propose a silvicultural approach that takes soil health into account. Using a biblical metaphor, the first chapter highlights the forest's critical role in the planet's future, emphasizing that forest biodiversity is essential for sustaining a planet inhabited by complex life forms like humans. The second chapter focuses to the...

Despite the wide amount of scientific contributions published on alien plant species, their diffusion dynamics, and their interactions with native taxa, it is increasingly difficult to slow down their spreading and their negative impact on habitats. Last recent years, in fact, a sharp rise in the number of new alien plant taxa introduced in Italy a...

A single paragraph of about 200 words maximum. For research articles, abstracts should give a pertinent overview of the work. We strongly encourage authors to use the following style of structured abstracts, but without headings: (1) Background: Place the question addressed in a broad context and highlight the purpose of the study; (2) Methods: bri...

We propose a silviculture with a purely biological logic that takes soil into account. The article is divided into three parts: 1) presentation of the issue in the context of biodiversity and forest pro-tection; 2) impact of the soil functioning on forestry; 3) possible implementation of soil functioning in forestry practice, to support and protect...

In recent years, three sections (Humipedon, Copedon and Lithopedon) were recognized in the soil profile. It was then possible to link the first and most biologically active section to the characteristics of the environment and soil genesis. In particular, it is now possible to distinguish organic horizons, mainly produced by arthropods and enchytra...

Identifying areas susceptible to invasion by an alien species is a strategy of prevention. We used national herbaria and global databases to assess the invasion trends of the two aquatic invasive species Ludwigia hexapetala and Ludwigia peploides subsp. montevidensis in Italy. We defined the invasion status with invasions curves and predicted poten...

The study of biodiversity is commonly carried out through different approaches, such as those at the level of genetics, species, communities/ecosystems, and landscapes. The group of geneticists, geobotanists and landscape researchers of the Department of agriculture, food and environmental sciences has been dealing with this topic for many years. I...

Ostrya carpinifolia forests are formations traditionally managed as coppice, with a high biodiversity that characterizes much of the Italian and Balkan low mountain and hill landscapes. Here, we analyze changes in vegetation, seed-bank, soil and litter at six different stages during the coppicing rotation and after 10 years of abandonment of an Ost...

Since the Greco-Roman era, most of the forest formations characterizing the low hill and lowland areas have been managed and strongly reduced in terms of surface area in order to obtain timber, fire wood, non-wood forest products (honey, mushrooms, etc.), pastures, agricultural and urban areas (Piussi & Alberti 2015). These activities are illustrat...

Airborne LIDAR technology has led to a dramatic increase in terrain information. LiDAR-derived high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) are now widely available, and have opened avenues for hydrologic and geomorphologic studies (Tarolli et al., 2009). In general all the main surface processes signatures are rightly recognized using a DTM grid...
