In this article, we propose a silvicultural approach that takes soil health into account. Using a biblical metaphor, the first chapter highlights the forest's critical role in the planet's future, emphasizing that forest biodiversity is essential for sustaining a planet inhabited by complex life forms like humans. The second chapter focuses to the...

Despite the wide amount of scientific contributions published on alien plant species, their diffusion dynamics, and their interactions with native taxa, it is increasingly difficult to slow down their spreading and their negative impact on habitats. Last recent years, in fact, a sharp rise in the number of new alien plant taxa introduced in Italy a...
A single paragraph of about 200 words maximum. For research articles, abstracts should give a pertinent overview of the work. We strongly encourage authors to use the following style of structured abstracts, but without headings: (1) Background: Place the question addressed in a broad context and highlight the purpose of the study; (2) Methods: bri...

We propose a silviculture with a purely biological logic that takes soil into account. The article is divided into three parts: 1) presentation of the issue in the context of biodiversity and forest pro-tection; 2) impact of the soil functioning on forestry; 3) possible implementation of soil functioning in forestry practice, to support and protect...

In recent years, three sections (Humipedon, Copedon and Lithopedon) were recognized in the soil profile. It was then possible to link the first and most biologically active section to the characteristics of the environment and soil genesis. In particular, it is now possible to distinguish organic horizons, mainly produced by arthropods and enchytra...
Identifying areas susceptible to invasion by an alien species is a strategy of prevention. We used national herbaria and global databases to assess the invasion trends of the two aquatic invasive species Ludwigia hexapetala and Ludwigia peploides subsp. montevidensis in Italy. We defined the invasion status with invasions curves and predicted poten...

We analysed the invasion history of two North American macrophytes (Elodea canadensis and E. nuttallii) in Italy, through an accurate census of all available herbarium and field records, dating between 1850 and 2019, and a rich literature collection describing the initial introduction and naturalisation phase that supports the results obtained by t...
It was time to take stock. We modified the humipedon classification key published in 2018 to make it easier and more practical. This morpho-functional taxonomy of the topsoil (humipedon) was only available in English; we also translated it into French and Italian. A standardized morpho-functional classification of humipedons (roughly the top 30–40...

The tradition of floristic studies in Italy has made it possible to obtain a good knowledge of plant diversity both on a national and regional scale. However, the lack of knowledge for some areas, advances in plant systematics and human activities related to globalization, highlight the need for further studies aimed at improving floristic knowledg...

Ostrya carpinifolia forests are formations traditionally managed as coppice, with a high biodiversity that characterizes much of the Italian and Balkan low mountain and hill landscapes. Here, we analyze changes in vegetation, seed-bank, soil and litter at six different stages during the coppicing rotation and after 10 years of abandonment of an Ost...
Since the Greco-Roman era, most of the forest formations characterizing the low hill and lowland areas have been managed and strongly reduced in terms of surface area in order to obtain timber, fire wood, non-wood forest products (honey, mushrooms, etc.), pastures, agricultural and urban areas (Piussi & Alberti 2015). These activities are illustrat...
Having identified the Ostrya carpinifolia forests as one of the most widespread forest types in the Apennines-Balkan bio-geographical region (Horvat 1950; Puncer and Zupancic 1982; Tabacchi and Gasparini 2012) and having highlighted the shortage of studies, and the lack of inclusion of these coenoses in the habitats described at European level (EEA...
