The continuously increasing amount of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data is becoming an important complementary source of information for humanitarian action especially when the availability of optical remote sensing is limited. The SAR-inherent speckle effect remains an obstruction to SAR image interpretation and automated analysis. Recently, dee...

Dwelling information is very important for various applications in humanitarian emergency response. For this, Earth observation is crucial to have spatially explicit and temporally frequent observations. Coupled with advances in computer vision, especially with the proliferation of state-of-the-art deep learning models, are providing a new opportun...

Refugee-dwelling footprints derived from satellite imagery are beneficial for humanitarian operations. Recently, deep learning approaches have attracted much attention in this domain. However, most refugees are hosted by low- and middle-income countries where accurate label data are often unavailable. The Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach...

This research assessed the influences of four band combinations and three types of pretrained weights on the performance of semantic segmentation in extracting refugee dwelling footprints of the Kule refugee camp in Ethiopia during a dry season and a wet season from very high spatial resolution imagery. We chose a classical network, U-Net with VGG1...

For immediate humanitarian response, the presence of up-to-date information plays a key role by providing relevant information on the status and degree of severity of the object or phenomena of interest. When it comes to emergency responses, sometimes, there are situations where onsite ground observations are inefficient or impractical for various...

Land degradation which is manifested by landscape change triggers soil erosion. Improper land management operations coupled with intense rainfall have intricated the problem in most parts of Ethiopian highlands. Every year soil loss costs 23% of the national GDP. Thus, identifying and prioritizing areas for conservation are imperative for proper po...

Crop type information is essential for many practical applications, yet its mapping is often constrained by inherent characteristics of most farming areas, such as fragmentation and small farm plots, changes in crop morphology across the season, and cloud cover. This study investigated whether these limitations could be overcome by using time-serie...

Soil erosion is a serious environmental problem arising from agricultural intensification, landscape changes, and degradation. Improper land management coupled with intense rainfall has intricated the problem in most parts of the Ethiopian highlands. Soil loss costs 23% of the national GDP. Thus, quantifying soil loss and prioritizing areas for con...

Satellite imagery is an important information source for research on remote sensing (RS)based humanitarian applications. The selection of satellite imagery is one of the most important steps for such research. This paper firstly shows the selection of satellite imagery in past research from 2015 to 2021. It can be found that most research on land c...

Morphometric analysis is a quantitative measurement and mathematical analysis of landforms. It plays a significant role in understanding the geohydrological characteristics of a drainage basin in relation to the terrain feature and its flow patterns. It also helps to estimate the incidence of infiltration and runoff, and other related hydrological...

The prime objective of this study was evaluating six satellite precipitation products by using standard statistical techniques to assess its capability to provide reliable rain rate (amount) and detect rainfall event correctly. High‐resolution precipitation products, Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS), Tropical Appli...

In prevailing global environmental change, rural livelihoods is one of a system affected by climate variability. The book presents the pattern of climate variability with respect to its impacts on rural livelihoods, vulnerability, adaptation strategies, coping mechanisms and institutional frameworks to respond for this perturbation in Ziway Dugda d...

Background Northern Ethiopian Highlands, including Guna-Tana watershed, have experienced profound natural resources degradation which are resulted from coupled natural and anthropogenic factors. To mitigate this problem, Ethiopian government has launched various soil and water conservation programs at different watersheds. Overall objective of this...
