Introduction
My research focusses on management of Fusarium diseases of small grains with host resistance, fungicides and agronomical practices (crop rotation, tillage), management of blackleg disease of canola (oilseed rape) with host resistance, fungicides, and determining the effect of farmer-retained seed, optimisation of fungicide deposition on wheat and canola, and management of powdery mildew of wheat with host resistance and optimal N-fertiliser levels.

A collection of isolates of the fungi Leptosphaeria maculans and L . biglobosa , which cause blackleg disease on Brassica napus (canola/oilseed rape) and other Brassicaceae species, was assembled to represent the global diversity of these pathogens and a resource for international research. The collection consists of 226 isolates (205 L . maculans...

Conservation agriculture relies on residue retention, crop rotation and reduced tillage. Crop rotation determines residue type, while tillage affects residue load and distribution. Although crop residue retention is often beneficial, residues can create challenges, including obstruction of planters during establishment and stubble-borne diseases. T...

Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat occurs commonly in irrigation regions of South Africa and less frequently in dryland regions. Previous surveys of Fusarium species causing FHB identified isolates using morphological characters only. This study reports on a comprehensive characterisation of FHB pathogens conducted in 2008 and 2009. Symptomatic wh...
Article
Chemical control of a yield-limiting, quality-reducing wheat disease like Fusarium head blight (FHB) is an important management strategy; however, no fungicides are registered against it in South Africa. The aim of this study was to determine foliar fungicides and seed treatment efficacy for FHB management. Three commercial fungicides and two seed...

Fusarium graminearum is ranked among the five most destructive fungal pathogens that affect agroecosystems. It causes floral diseases in small grain cereals including wheat, barley and oats, as well as maize and rice. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies reporting species within the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) a...

Fusarium graminearum is ranked among the five most destructive fungal pathogens that affect agroecosystems. It causes floral diseases in small grain cereals including wheat, barley and oats, as well as summer crops such as maize and rice. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies reporting species within the Fusarium graminearum spe...

INTRODUCTION Fusarium head blight (FHB) and Fusarium crown rot (FCR) are important diseases of wheat caused primarily by Fusarium graminearum s.s. and F. pseudograminearum, respectively. FHB also contaminates grain with mycotoxins like deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA), while DON can be translocated from crown tissue exhibiting FCR symptom...
Article
Fungal species comprising the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) may cause disease in maize and wheat. Host preference within the FGSC has been suggested, in particular F. boothii towards maize ears. Therefore, the disease development and mycotoxin production of five FGSC species in maize and wheat grain was determined. Eighteen isolates r...
Conference Paper
Members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) infect several cereal crops, including wheat, maize and sorghum, to cause diseases such as Fusarium head blight (FHB), Gibberella ear rot (GER) and grain mold (GM), respectively. These diseases reduce grain yield and quality, which result in food security and safety concerns as infected gra...

Weed resistance to herbicides present one of the greatest current economic challenges to agriculture. Herbicide resistant ryegrass (Lolium spp.) is a serious problem in Western Cape grain-producing areas. Morphological and pathogenic analyses were performed on ryegrass samples. Morphologically, 50% of specimens were classified as rigid ryegrass, 48...

Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, gibberella ear rot (GER) of maize and grain mold (GM) of sorghum is caused by, amongst others, members within the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC). Fusarium spp. are important soilborne pathogens of grapevines in some countries, causing root necrosis and decline. Surveys conducted in 2001 and 2002 to determine the status of soilborne diseases of grapevines in three nurseries in the Western Cape, showed that Fusarium spp. were consistently associated with diseased grapevine roots and crowns. Fu...

Soilborne diseases in grapevine nurseries represent a complex problem, with potentially devastating consequences for the grapevine industry. Previous research conducted on soilborne diseases of nursery grapevines in the Western Cape province in the 1970’s, indicated that Phytophthora cinnamomi was the most important pathogen. A re-assessment of the...
