Interactivity is the catchword for a wide range of innovative solutions that concept designers and engineers are developing in every area of technology and culture. For the authors interaction is more than a technological or aesthetic concept, it is a new means to ally humans and technology in a dynamic and reciprocal form of "living in technology"...

Grappling with technology always has its ludic aspects. Why do we struggle with bad systems and programs again and again? Because we cannot accept losing to a machine. It is this feeling of defeat, of capitulation that causes us, when we can’t manage to discover the secret of a machine, to enforce our will upon it. This is a typical ludic approach....

This PhD research critically investigates the cultural and social rootedness (Verortung) of novel materials and technologies, exploring inbetween prosthetic relations between the body and the environment (Umwelt). A range of novel materials, often called smart materials , raise the demand for new design explorations, techniques, knowledge and applications. Materials that change in response to external stimuli, with selfactuating, inflating, adaptive, bendable, responsive and dynamic properties, have programmable qualities or adapt to environmental conditions are radically different to the conventional materials of Design. Prosthetic relations propose interactions between so called smart materials in relation to the body, which extend the body into the world, reforming the body and the world and their relationship.
