Since Ockham’s razor is often used as a heuristic to argue in favour of one interpretation of quantum mechanics or another we want to clarify its origins, its philosophical embedding in philosophy of science and discuss its application in quantum mechanics. First, we provide an overview of the historical context and environment to understand the or...

The year 1935 holds significant importance in the history of quantum mechanics. During this year, Albert Einstein, along with his collaborators Nathan Rosen and Boris Podolsky, published a seminal paper that challenged the completeness of quantum mechanics. Together with Nathan Rosen Einstein wrote a further paper on specific solutions of the field...

Quantum mechanics is undoubtedly one of the most successful theories in physics, but its foundations and interpretations are still a heavily disputed topic. Quantum mechanics allows for various interpretations, but it is surprising how significant the differences can be concerning the ontological commitments of these interpretations. Before we can...
Chapter
Quantum mechanics is undoubtedly the most successful theory of physics of the 20th century; it provided a theory for unexplained observed phenomena, it predicted new phenomena, and it provided the technological framework for some of the technological revolutions of the twentieth century. But it also revealed a significant problem with the ontology...

Reality is an extremely broad concept, so we aim to provide an overview of its aspects and presumptions, as well as clarify its definitions for conceptual use. Since the conception of reality will change vastly in quantum mechanics, first we want to provide an overview on aspects of classical realism, which are relevant to our discussion on reality...

David Bohm has put forward the first deterministic interpretation of quantum physics, and for this he seems to be regarded as a champion of determinism by physicists (both his contemporaries and the supporters of his interpretation, the so-called "Bohmians") as well as by historians of physics. The standard narrative is that he underwent a "convers...

We explore the different notions of completeness applied in the EPR discussion following and amending the thorough analysis of Arthur Fine. To this aim, we propose a classification scheme for scientific theories that provides a methodology for analyzing the different levels at which inter-pretive approaches come into play. This allows us to contras...

After a discussion about the possibilities and status of augmented reality in education, a good practice example of an augmented reality application is presented. This case study examines the use of an augmented reality app in higher education to support abstract STEM content, such as vectors. Based on this example, the implementation of such apps...

Driver disregard for the minimum safety distance increases the probability of rear-end collisions. In order to contribute to active safety on the road, we propose in this work a low-cost Forward Collision Warning system that captures and processes images. Using cameras located in the rear section of a leading vehicle, this system serves the purpose...

Gender mainstreaming and managing diversity of the student (as well as employee) body is relevant for every institution of higher education. Some subject areas, such as STEM or social sciences, are even less probable to attract all genders or minorities than other subjects. In these fields, it is the responsibility of institutions of higher educati...

Disregard for the rules regarding the minimum safety distance can make the avoidance of a rear-end collision nearly impossible. In a joint effort to enhance safety and improve the decision making processes on an individual level, we contribute to the state of the art with an innovative and affordable system that identifies vehicles and provides a r...

Disputes on the foundations of Quantum Mechanics often involve the conception of reality, without a clear definition on which aspect of this broad concept of reality one refers. We provide an overview of conceptions of reality in classical physics, in philosophy of science and in Quantum Mechanics and its interpretations and analyse their differenc...

A physical theory consists of the mathematical formalism and an interpretation, which contains the definition of symbols, measurement assignments, concepts and principles, and an ontology. We present a scheme to classify these different levels of a physical theory and apply it to Newtonian Mechanics and the interpretations of Quantum Mechanics. We...

In May of 1935 Einstein published with two co-authors the famous EPR-paper about entangled particles, which questioned the completeness of Quantum Mechanics by means of a gedankenexperiment. Only one month later he published a work that seems unconnected to the EPR-paper at first, the so called Einstein-Rosen-paper that presented a solution of the...

Ockham's razor is a heuristic concept applied in philosophy of science to decide between 2 or more feasible physical theories. Ockham's razor operates by deciding in favour of the theory with least assumptions and concepts, roughly speaking the less complex theory. Could Ockham's razor not easily treat the different interpretations as theories and...

Most of the applications for pedestrian navigation are based on information that is useful for car navigation systems, while the basic needs of pedestrians are seldom considered. We contribute to the current research in the field by proposing a pedestrian-tailored navigation application based on path attributes, that as of yet have not been conside...

A driver’s inattention to or disregard for the minimum safety distance creates a hazardous situation in which avoiding a rear-end collision is nearly impossible. In a joint effort to implement safety and decision-making processes at an individual level, we present in this paper a cooperative approach to increase the driver’s visual awareness of saf...

An effective formalism is developed to handle decaying two-state systems. Herewith, observables of such systems can be described by a single operator in the Heisenberg picture. This allows for using the usual framework in quantum information theory and, hence, to enlighten the quantum features of such systems compared to non-decaying systems. We ap...
