This investigation was carried out with the aim of verifying whether transmittance detection modes on soaked paper, which is a simple and attractive determination approach for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, can be improved by using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as suitable media for minimizing reflection and refraction phenomena affec...
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a mutagenic secondary product of the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, often used as a target for the food oxidation state, whose determination is frequently performed by its slow reaction with thiobarbituric acid (TBA), dissolved in acidified aqueous-ethanol medium, to produce a pink colored MDA-TBA adduct. In t...
This investigation was carried out with the aim of stressing that technologically-advanced systems can be prototyped and produced by using 3D printing and inexpensive electronic modules. In particular, open-source technologies are opening new exciting possibilities also in the area of chemical analysis, thus making possible the assembly of customiz...
In the present contribution, four classes of Ln(III) complexes (Ln = Eu and Tb) have been synthesized and characterized in aqueous solution. They differ by charge, Ln(bpcd)+ [bpcd2- = N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane N,N′-diacetate] and Ln(bQcd)+ (bQcd2- = N,N′-bis(2-quinolinmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane N,N′-diacetate)...
It has been possible to obtain an unprecedented affinity towards hydrogen carbonate: the positively charged complexes reveal the highest logK values (5.76 and 5.94, respectively) reported up to now in the literature, for the formation of a luminescent adduct with hydrogen carbonate, characterized by an uncommon 1:2 stoichiometry.
The racemic complex can be used to reveal L-lactate by measuring the induced CPL spectrum. Interestingly this has been demonstrated in a commercial complex solution for medical use, containing several electrolytes, namely Ringer’s lactate.
The coordination features and signaling of the L-lactate ion by a [Tb(bpcd)]+ (bpcd = N,N′-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N’-diacetate) complex have been investigated by means of a combination of techniques including total luminescence, calorimetry and circularly polarized luminescence. The L-lactate/[Tb(bpcd)]+ association con...
In this work the synthesis and characterisation of silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with the siderophore deferoxamine have been carried out.
Water-soluble Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes with N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N'-diacetic acid (H2bpcd) have been synthesized and characterized in their racemic and enantiopure forms. The ligand has been designed to bind Ln(III) ions, providing a dissymmetric environment able to solicit strong chiroptical features while...
In this paper the trifluoromethansulphonate (CF3SO3⁻, OTf⁻, triflate) Eu³⁺ complexes of a new family of imine-based ligands with 1:1 ligand to metal mole ratio have been employed for luminescence sensing of NO3⁻, F⁻, Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻, CH3COO⁻ and ClO4⁻, in non-anhydrous acetonitrile (wet AN = wAN) solution. The ligands show different donor ability and...

A new voltammetric electronic tongue formed with graphite-epoxy composite electrodes which were modified with metal-oxide nanoparticles is presented for the quantification of tryptophan, tyrosine and cysteine aminoacid mixtures. The signals were obtained by cyclic voltammetry, and data was processed using two different chemometric techniques, artif...
A new VET with five graphite-epoxy composite sensors modified with metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) is presented for the quantification of tryptophan (TRP), tyrosine (TYR) and cysteine (CYS) mixtures. The signals were obtained by cyclic voltammetry (CV), and data was processed by artificial neural networks (ANNs) (compression with fast Fourier trans...
Early weaned piglets suffer from gastrointestinal and growth disorders due to inflammation of the intestine and its mucose. This can be prevented by including ZnO in piglets’ diet, but high amounts of ZnO (~3000 mg/Kg) are necessary to be effective. So, high concentration of Zn is accumulated in the slurry, which leads to an important environmental...
