Introduction
Gaurav Bhardwaj is a PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at York University. His research focuses on the impact, transport, and fate of microplastics in biological wastewater treatment. With a background in chemical engineering and bioengineering from IIT Roorkee, Gaurav combines interdisciplinary approaches to advance environmental sustainability and improve wastewater management practices.

Microplastics (MPs), discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), are found abundantly in freshwater systems. Along with MPs, various microorganisms that evade WWTP disinfection may colonize these particles, leading to biofouling. This study assessed the performance of six bacterial strains isolated from wastewater and the factors influenci...
The expanding field of alternative proteins represents a transformative approach to addressing global food security and sustainability challenges. Among these, fermentation-derived alternative proteins cultivated from microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and algae offer a promising avenue for sustainable protein production. This review explores...
The search for sustainable energy has led to the development of biofuels as a promising alternative to fossil fuels. Drop-in biofuels show significant progress by being compatible with existing fuel infrastructure. However, moving from the conception of biofuels to commercializing drop-in variants faces numerous challenges mainly due to complex leg...
This chapter explores recent genetic and metabolic engineering advances to produce drop-in biofuels. It provides a comprehensive overview of the techniques employed, including gene overexpression, gene cloning, gene therapy, and the knockout gene technique, which enhances microorganisms’ ability to produce drop-in biofuels. Likewise, the metabolic...
For accurate and reliable analysis of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater (WW), it is imperative to comprehend the
significance of pre-treating WW before analysis. The suspended solids (SS) in the matrix tend to adhere to the
MPs during filtration, which interferes with the detection of the MPs. In this regard, the present study aims to
develop and o...
